Why trash compactors on the Death Star?
I thought about the trash compactors on the Death Star, and realized, that I don't know if they make sense. I mean, I have read that trash is compacted for shooting it out into space (as done in normal normal Star Destroyers). The problem is, that all ships bigger as a Star Destroyer (including the Executor and of course the Death Star) got a, or in the case of the Death Star, several, recycling plant(s).
So why do they still compact thier trash, when they not shoot it out (the compactor was deep within the station and shooting trash out seems impossible with such a large ship) and recycle it instead?

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

Maybe compacting it is a prerequisite for recycling. Or they seperate the recycleable materials out and compact the rest.

Perhaps, "just because" -- that is, since it's possible a lot of the Death Star's construction used modules or units that (internally at least) are the same or similar to other large capital ships, the trash compactors were included in the design even though she didn't need them. Another possibility is the Imperial Navy wanted them included because the other ships in the fleet have them, and by god, this battle station is gonna have them!
(RW example: Sea Shadow, stealth ship built by Lockheed for the USN as stealth demonstrator, was required to have a paint locker. Why? - because BuShip inspectors demanded it have one, since every ship in the navy has a paint locker.... )

We may be able to tie it in with the function of the trash compactor. The tentacle monster could be there because it feeds on organic matter that is on the trash, so it cleans it before they compact it for recycling.Darth_Zod wrote:i'd be more interested in why the death star had a tentacle monster lurking in its trash compactor than the trash compactor itself.

It does not have bones. also it appeared to dissapear somewhere when it realized the compactor sequence was begining. It went somewhere before the walls started closing in.Crazedwraith wrote:Hows does the dianoga (tentacle monster) survive the squishing process though?

And I thought the compactor was a closed of system, were nothing could get out.....
Oh, by the way, I think that this wasn't only water. Since the compactor is linked to the recycling system. Yuck. Luke took a bath in a mix of water and piss, because I bet that the toilets eject thier stuff into the compactors for recycling also....(otherwise I cound't imagine from where this water cames from.)
Nice to know that Luke bathed in the toilet water of guys like TK-241.......

Perhaps the dianoga is used as part of the waste disposal system in a fashion similar to worms being used in bio composts.Darth_Zod wrote:i'd be more interested in why the death star had a tentacle monster lurking in its trash compactor than the trash compactor itself.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
