TIE Cockpit discrepency

Post by Alan Bolte »

How the fuck did I miss this till now? What idiot put together the cockpits for the internal shots for the TIEs? The viewport struts are all wrong. Am I the last to notice this? Did they fix it for the SE? Will they for the DVD? Can I use more question marks?

No, you're not the first to notice that.

For those of you who haven't noticed it, the interior shots of the TIEs show a normal octagon, but the exterior shots have the cockpit struts form an octagon slightly tilted to the side, so that it's resting on an apex.

As far as I know, there's no explanation for this, and no, it has not been fixed in the SE, and no, they do not plan to fix this or any other major mistakes for the DVD.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Since those scenes are from the pilot's POV, could the discrepency be an effect of the helmet?

Well, the stormtrooper helmets don't have lenses per se, they're really photoreceptors that give the soldier a holographic representation of what they should be seeing. IIRC, stormies can even view themselves in 3rd person; having a 360 view of the battlefield.

Third person? First I've ever heard of that. That would imply an external camera hovering around them.

Or neato sensors. Artoo could record a full 3d Leia depsite only having the camera in front of her.

But, yeah, what's the source for that?

I always figured Artoo just scanned through Leia, personally.

No, I think they have sensors in the back(the gray squares?).

Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary by David West Reynolds, pg. 37 wrote:Stormtrooper Helmet

There are a number of different models of Imperial stormtrooper standard issue helmets, incorporating various specialized components and changing over time with new developments. In this model, enhanced optical equipment creates holographic images of the surrounding terrain, shielding the eye from excessive brightness and offering vision through many barriers such as smoke, darkness, and fire. Optical equipment in trooper helmets can range from simple eye lenses to these elaborate vision processors. The helmets are cooled and atmosphere-processed to keep the trooper operating at peak efficiency at all times.
It doesn't specifically say that the trooper can see himself in third-person, but it doesn't rule it out. However, I have no idea why a trooper would want to see himself in third-person. Sure, it's great in video games, but it would take a hell of a long time to get used to in real life, because you'd still be controlling yourself by moving your body, but you'd see yourself from outside of your body. If that makes sense.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Fautly memory + overactive imagination = bad info. Sorry, "surrounding terrain" somehow became "360 panorama". It would make them more difficult to sneak up on, but it would be bitch to control. Maybe they see rearview screens or something...

I think they can see a panoramic image of they're surroundings, which doesn't imply a 3D third person view. IIRC, Boba Fett had a panoramic 360 display.

Hmm, I'm new at this but let me try*:

Each TIE is a TARDIS of sorts, that appears different on the inside as it does on the outside.

This technology also explains the problems with the Falcon's cockpit.

Isn't there also a discrepancy on the Falcon's cockpit?

I think it was only for ANH. IIRC, it was fixed with ESB and RotJ.

A minor difference between the cockpit window panels on the effects model and the stage set.

One of the big problems with the Falcon's cockpit is from ESB, when Chewie and Han are working on her in the rebel hangar on Hoth. When Han tells Chewie to "TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF!", we see Chewbacca fretting inside the cockpit, the camera looking in from Han's position. The entire cockpit module is way too small in this shot, the reason being that they constructed only that part of the ship for the scene, without properly checking for scale.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Now that I think about it I seem to remember the "fix" in the movies actually being a "Special Edition" thing. Ie: the ANH Falcon cgi's were modeled to be accurate with the ESB/ROTJ ones.

But the other shots may be unchanged if they were messed up before.
