I apologize if this thread has been dealt with already, but...
How did the Old Republic raise money, through a general tax of its member worlds? Holonet fees? Through tariffs? Through the regulatory fees that we are familiar with in the modern world? After all, someone/something has to pay for the upkeep of the Senate building and the Jedi operating budget if nothing else.
Next question... Just how many Senators are there? Say about the time of Episode One? I'm guessing thousands (it certainly looks that way based off of visuals in the various films)?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

I believe there are 1014 senators. Each represents many worlds.

Many thanks to the two of you.
I'll just make a guess as far as the taxation goes. I'm guessing it's a combination of tariffs (?spelling?) and a tiny fee of its member states, because even a mere 1% tax of the million plus worlds not to mention corporations in the Republic would yield a dizzying amount of money.
EDIT: Or hell even 0.0001% would still be a shitload of money...

I thought that Old Republic citizens paid taxes to the sector governments but not the Senate, although there definatively were trading tariffs supplying the central Republic government with money... that's the impression I got from EP1, at least.willburns84 wrote:Many thanks to the two of you.

Not much, actually, on the subject of taxation itself- we hear about how the Republic is "not rich" in Courtship, but other than that, off the top of my memory(I have read almost all the EU books up to Star by Star)Peregrin Toker wrote:I thought that Old Republic citizens paid taxes to the sector governments but not the Senate, although there definatively were trading tariffs supplying the central Republic government with money... that's the impression I got from EP1, at least.willburns84 wrote:Many thanks to the two of you.
