May The Force Be With You

Post by Montcalm »

Today i watched again SW ANH on tv and i started thinking,if the Jedi were slaughtered by the Empire at the time of episode 3 then why did they kept saying "May the force be with you" 20 years after, was it some kind of tradition?

I recall only two characters (not Obi-wan) who made that blessing - Han Solo and General Dodonna. Han was saying it to Luke just because (stirrings of conscience), while Dodonna was probably old enough to know who and what the Jedi were and what they were about. In any case it's a blessing, meant to bolster people's faith in themselves and their cause.

And also the Empire's efforts to eradicate the Jedi, while successful, weren't completely thorough - obviously a lot of influences survived, as did some practitioners.

Not surprisingly, seeings they had a Jedi Knight as one of their most accomplished and experienced combat veterans, as well as other Force Sensitives. :)

Meh, the rebellion was a movment to topple the Empire and restore the goverment to the glory of the Old Republic. Hence, its not surprising that they would use and embrace tid bits of the Old Republic including slogans.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Admiral Ackbar says "May the force be with us" immediately prior to the engagement at Endor.

Yeah I know. Montcalm said "I recently watched ANH" and that was the source I was basing my musings on. By the time of Endor Luke was obviously walking around like a Jedi, which makes Ackbar's blessing in perspective considering Luke, at that time, had been a hero of the Rebellion as well as forming Rogue Squad.

The May the Force Be With you is obvoiusly a Jedi blessing. It was used by the Rebellion possibly as a symbol of what they are fighting for as tey are fightingto throw a sith lord out of ruling the galaxy. They are fighting with hopes of returning the Jedi as protectors of the universe. I note that Leia's first move as soon as she sees that war is unavoidable is to try and bring Obi_Wan out of retirement. It Is OBVIOUSE she knew Obi-Wan was on Tatooine or she would not have gone there! So we know at least Ball Organa knew Obi-Wan was still alive and where he was hiding. Is it possible he had had some kind of with Obi-Wan over the years?

The same reason why atheists say "bless you" when someone sneezes. Its a cultural habit that's been around too long to go away easily.

Actually, I stopped doing that.

How? Well, I went to Japan. Nobody there says anything when you sneeze, except maybe offer you a Kleenex.

Actually I don't say that at all, and while I don't class myself as a true atheist I also don't class myself as a christian. The reason why I don't say it is because I stopped and thought about what it actually means, and realised it's mostly absurd. So I don't say "bless you!" when someone sneeses cause it doesn't make much sense to me. :?

Lucas actually based "may the Force be with you" on the old Christian phrase "may the Lord be with you and with your spirit."

When it first appeared in the rough draft for SW, it was "may the force of others be with you."

Is belief in the Force tied to the existence of the Jedi? Just because only certain people (Jedi, Sith, etc.) can use the Force doesn't mean that widespread belief in it would suddenly stop.

Other groups have used the force, not just Jedi and Sith.

As for widespread belief, I would say it isn't tied to it. Yet. In a long ass time with no Force users, it may die out to legend.

However, at the time of ANH, you still have people that have or potentially could have seen Jedi in action, so even with no Jedi, they would believe.

Actually, several star wars source books state the Rebellion started using "may the force be with you" as a response to Darth Vader and the Emperor's force abilities. The Emperor's force powers were suspected even before 'A New Hope"
(reference for the Emperor's force powers being a rebel belief: 'The Farlander files')

Using the qoute 'May the Force be with you', was a way of saying like the Jedi of old, they were going to fight and defeat evil.

It was probably a saying that was widespread in the time of the Old Republic. Personally, when I realized how little time there was between ANH and the rise of the Empire, I was surprised that somebody as well travelled as Han believed that the Force was just some old religion. It was,I thought, just an old saying that Palpy and Vader lacked either the ability or the drive to supress.
"I want to mow down a bunch of motherfuckers with absurdly large weapons and relative impunity - preferably in and around a skyscraper. Then I want to fight a grim battle against the unlikely duo of the Terminator and Robocop. The last level should involve (but not be limited to) multiple robo-Hitlers and a gorillasaurus rex."--Uraniun235 on his ideal FPS game

"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force."--Darth Vader

Han used to be an Imperial officer remember. Their indoctrination may have affected him more then he might actually admit!

he stole my response that i had lined up for this subject. In real life "may the force be with you" is Lucas saying "May the lord be with you" same syllables same amount of words. In the SW galaxy most of the Rebel Alliance high ranking officers were old enough to see the Jedi in their reign just before their fall and to think what Han is like late 20's or early 30's during the time of ANH? Han was only 10ish at the time of Episode 3
