Are you stupid? Upconverting DVDs onto a large screen is worse than watching a DVD on a small screen. If I watched my Firefly DVDs on a 55" screen via my PS3, it would look like shit. If I watched it on my 26" SD tv, it would look fine. Note that they look like shit on my 25.5" monitor because of the resolution.

Are you pulling my pud or something? I looked at those pics for a good ten minutes and aside from the 4th, 5th and 6th photos looking slightly darker I can't tell any difference. You'd have more variation between makes of TV sets.

Nah. Just showing how good the OT looks in HD. It's completely irrelevant to my point about 480p and 1080p. I didn't want to double post. Sorry for the confusion.

Who buys a Blu-ray player to use on anything other than hardware to display its capabilities? That's what I was addressing. DVDs are absolute trash in the quality department, even when viewed on an SDTV: 480i/p, sometimes anamorphic widescreen, lossy audio, poor definition, limited space, etc. So, no, they don't "still look fine".

If you think the difference between 1080 and DVD is something nobody with a decent tv will ever notice, you might want to get your eyes checked. That smudge you saw is actually a recognisable object now!

I agree with Stark - the difference between blu-ray and DVD on a decent TV is huge. If 90% of the population supposedly can't tell the difference, then 90% of the population must be blind as a bat. Anyway, here's a sabre fix between the DVD and the Blu-ray:-

Except, you know, 1080p is on BD cases now, and there is text that mentions the capabilities of BD, sometimes exaggerating, of course: "The Perfect Hi-Def Movie Experience", "Perfect Picture and Purest Digital Sound Available", "1920x1080p Full Resolution High Definition Picture", etc. It's hard not to notice the difference. There are of course morons who think DVDs have better coloring, but they are just that, morons. The only time you should even watch a DVD, if you have a BD player, is if what you own isn't on the format yet, like TV shows, or the BD upgrade is an utter mess, like The Big Lebowski.

Edit: You know what? Just because the populace doesn't know about the technical aspects of a BD is irrelevant to my point that DVDs are trash: when one claims they are just fine, they are dead wrong.

Ah, but DVDs are fine until you get used to hi-def.
At first you're like, "Wow, this is so much better!"
Then you really start sneering at DVDs.
It's a bit like what happened when people went from VHS (which, by the way, was fine) to DVDs. And VHS started to look really shit...

It's not wrong to say that DVDs are fine, to many people (mostly those who haven't seen BD quality) they are.
It is wrong, however to claim that Blu-Rays aren't several dozen shitloads better than them.

It's nice enough to have a decent TV and sound system courtesy of my roommate right now. Didn't even have that a few weeks ago. Thankfully, I haven't seen enough Blu-Rays for me to do ARGH ALL DVDS ARE SHITE MUST TRADE IN MY COLLECTION, which is good, because I'm a fucking grad student.

Not that your passion isn't inspiring or anything.

The best things about Blu-Ray from my perspective is that 1) it drives down the prices on DVDs, 2) the improvement is marginal enough for non-videophiles that upgrading isn't a huge deal (as opposed to the DVD > VHS incentives that are not rewinding, chapter stops, etc) and so you can still get DVDs everywhere. It's actually kind of remarkable that the technology has been around for years and nobody in my social circle or my family has ever sprung for one.

I don't know if this offends your sensibilities, but it will kind of amuse me if it does.

I did watch the "laserdisc-ripped" DVD version of the original cut ESB last night. It was definitely sub-par video, but the audio was fine and a good time was had by all. I actually like 2004!ESB but our houseguest was an OT purist.

I'm pretty sure it was the silver VHS edition in the late 90s. I've seen the DVD versions, but I wasn't going to buy them again. I don't really have a need to ever watch the movies again; I watched the OT a dozen times as a kid.

At least the BD has the draw of high definition; the Alien/Aliens BD releases were fucking amazing, and Aniron's shots make SW look way better than I've ever seen it before.

Sadly I already know everything that happens.

yeah that does tend to become an issue when you're seeing it for the hundredth time. The last time I saw it I found I could recite practically every line as it happened. That tends to suck the enjoyment out of a movie. Probably why I haven't watched the OT in a couple of years.
