WTF is it with the At-AT?

There's only one scene in the battle of Hoth were you can see snowtroopers running against the trench line and firing on the rebel troopers.
I don't remember the exact moment but I will search for it.
In that scene the camera is a bit farther behind the trench line and you can see a couple of snowtroopers in the snow, running against the camera.
They're firing and the blasts moves towards the rebel troops, in the direction of the camera.
Yes it's almost at the end of the battle, but they're there.
On the other hand, why would someone let out the troops from the armoured walker before reaching the trench line?
1. There is no cover.
2. There is heavy AP fire from the Golanarms towers.
3. The troops would run several miles (in snow!!!) to get to the trenches.
4. I don't think they could take down a T-47 with an E-11.
Veers' tactic was good. He destroyed the artillery then let out the troops to engage the rebel troops.

I don't remember that scene at all. I'll have to watch ESB again (what a sacrifice).Boba Fett wrote:As for close support:

I just watched the Battle of Hoth, and there are no Snowtroopers advancing on the trenches. There are several shots with retreating rebel troops that you may have mistaken for Snowtroopers.
EDIT: Here's an example of rebel troopers retreating

Also, contrary to what was previously stated, the AT-ATs do have a large strut on the interior side of their foot, just like the large walker concept sketch. It can easily be seen here:

This thing seems that it can adjust the sole of the walker to the ground in case of side steps. If the presence of this thing is confirmed by the newest DVD edition screenshots, we can assume that the AT-ATs are capable of interesting maneuvers (beside of the quite quick turn seen).
What about the windows on the central hull part? Maybe the AT-AT has an internal coordination (commanding) center for its infantry contingent.

There are a few similar scenes, but none which have snowtroopers in them. I just watched the SE Widescreen ESB version of the battle. I'll watch it again, but I didn't see any with snowtroopers.

IIRC (and I don't want to start up my ESB tape just to watch a two second scene), there are no shots of the Snowtroopers outside of the walkers until they're seen breaking through into Echo Base.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

Once again the SW Arcade Game (yeah its not a great source but its a source) says otherwise. Dagnabit guys there is evidence the snowtroopers dismounted just short of the trenchs, however weak, which to me makes the point.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:IIRC (and I don't want to start up my ESB tape just to watch a two second scene), there are no shots of the Snowtroopers outside of the walkers until they're seen breaking through into Echo Base.

You can't rule it out. Of course, the "AT-AT squats down" method described in some of the books couldn't have happened; you'd think someone would notice that. But they could have fast-roped down to the ground from the moving walkers, which were moving at a pace which would safely permit such as thing (provided they don't get trampled by the feet).CmdrWilkens wrote:Once again the SW Arcade Game (yeah its not a great source but its a source) says otherwise. Maybe they just wanted to clear out the trench areas of Rebel resistance that wouldn't be obvious from a walker's perspective, just in case there were buried fortifications or stragglers or something like that.

In the game they do indeed fast rope down about 100-200m shy of the trench (based on a REALLY rough call on my part). I think its proof enough that the AT-ATs fill the IFV role perfectly: they serve as armored troop carriers until they are so close that they might miss opposing infantry and they also have enough weaponry to effectively engage the enemy at range.Darth Wong wrote:You can't rule it out. Now I found what I was talking about.Robert Treder wrote:There are a few similar scenes, but none which have snowtroopers in them. I just watched the SE Widescreen ESB version of the battle. I'll watch it again, but I didn't see any with snowtroopers.
A bit hard to tell where it is but I'll describe it.
Search for the scene when R2-D2 is lifted to Luke's X-wing.
Then you will see two walkers firing.
Then a tripod rebel blaster is on screen.
In the next shot a speeder flying through the screen near to an AT-AT's head.
Then you will see a rebel trooper runing towards the camera and jumps into the trench.
Step the movie...
You can see three man running towards the camera in the back.
They're not shooting just running towards the trench.
Some blasts hit the snow around them and they are coming from the direction of the trench.

I see the scene you're talking about, but those are just three figures against the snow; you can't make out if they're snowtroopers or not. Besides, they're coming at the trench from the Rebel's side, not the AT-AT's side (look where the artillery is facing).
I'm not saying the snowtroopers didn't disembark before reaching the trenches, I'm just saying we don't see any do it in the movie.

I don't have the widescreen version so I suppose the gun must be at the edge of the scene, which I can't see that way...

It's on the lefthand side. I'd post a pic, but I don't have the ability to capture images from videotape. Damn, Lucas needs to release the DVD!
