For that to work, you'd also need to mute it during the escape from Cloud City - Luke and Vader have a brief telepathic exchange there, as well.

Besides, the whole "I am your father" bit has become so ingrained into popular culture that most people probably know anyway, even if they haven't watched Star Wars.

Actually, it was my brother's decision as far as my nephews are concerned. He had the OT on laserdisc and wouldn't let them watch until they saw ROTS. The next day we all watched the OT and I have to say, once you get past little things like picture quality, the PT made the OT that much better. The destruction of Alderaan upset the kids a lot more since Leia's parents were blown to bits (they were shocked Jimmy Smits didn't survive) and I already mention the value added to ROTJ. I first saw ANH when I was about their age and I was more upset at the massacred Jawas than Alderaan.

When I watched with the female friend and other adults we watched them in order because she had already seen AOTC and we figured it would be easier to just watch them in order. She wasn't the only one moved by ROTJ after all the stuff in the prequels.

Personally, I like the idea of 4,5, 1-3,6. It has roughly the same pace as Godfather 2, which has the middle section devoted mostly to the young Vito Corleone.

You take exception to ep2 but not ep1? Care to explain that one?
I obviously can't speak for him, but I've seen complaints about Episode 2 not "feeling" like Star Wars. IIRC, Wong has mentioned that AotC is his least favourite becasue of that reason. Me, I put it both above TPM and ANH. It's by far the funniest movie (made me laugh the most), and I'm a total sucker for all the action that happens in Geonosis.

That is mostly correct. EpII felt like an elaborate fan flick. (What is with those weird zoom ins during the battle on Geonosis

) And as for Ep I, while I would have like a different version of the story that was told, as A MOVIE, (Editing, pacing) I liked it much more than II. It "felt" like SW.

It struck me as a half-assed attempt to look like some sort of war-time movie reel, like the camera crews in WWII used to produce.

I'm an AotC fan. Yeah, it's got a weird structure, but it felt like Star Wars to me and I enjoyed it much more than Episode I.

As for the "flashback" viewing order, while I intend to try it sometime, and I can easily see its advantages, it seems like a bit of a tough sell. "Ok...we're watching 4, then 5, them 1, 2, 3, and 6?" A rather large chunk of Star Wars virgins not only know most of the big OT surprises, but would probably see any weird order as some sort of geek ritual. (Not that it's not worth a try anyway.)

Well, watching all six movies in a short span of time IS a sort of geek ritual, no matter what the order.

Yeah, but quite a few people are interested in "deflowering" themselves I've found, since Star Wars is so ingrained in the popular culture. I suppose it's a question of getting it over with, lol.

In about 13 years time, hopefully having cultivated her interest in classic literary canon and popular culture, I will sit down with my daughter once a week for six weeks and watch them chronologically. We will discuss them, and compare her experience viewing them to my own in the 'original' order. It will be a unique bonding experience which we will not share with her mother, who hates sci-fi and has no hobbies.

At least, that's the hopeful fantasy
