In some points I agree with the problems mentioned on that site. I hate the presence of R2-D2 in the prequels. Not to mention its newly found - later forgotten flying capabilities. :(

Alot of people mention the droids c3po and r2d2 and their memory problems...did it occur to noone that their memories would have been erased? I believe in AHN, Owen mentions taking the droid to Ankerhead and having their memories erased...can't be that hard

Exactly, it's entirely possible that Captain Antillies (Or Colton if you go by the original novelization) could and probably would have had their memories wiped

Do you seriosly state that a memory erased droid forgets about its own body (about the built in jet engines)? Maybe ep III will resolve it showing how the engines were removed.
In ANH Luke believed Artoo mentioning Obi Van as its owner, while C3PO said that their last owner was captain Antilles. He was NOT surprised by that a droid remembers its previous owners.

TESB (Dagobah):
- It was spat out, flow a few seconds and crashed. It had the time to activate its engines.
- It was levitated by Yoda and did not try to fly back to the ground or anything.
RoTJ:
Tatuin:
- They jumped out into the sand and R2 dived completely. It was not to hide since we saw more from C3PO then the full height of R2D2.
Endor:
- It cut the ewoks' net and surely knew it would fall.

Artoo's Leg Jets

Post by Guri_ps12 »

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to bring a theory to the group and see if it is viable.

Concerning the leg jets that are featured in Epi. 2. A possible situation could be that sometime during the events of Epi 2 through Epi. 4, Artoo could somehow have been damaged beyond feaseable repair, resulting in the internal memory being tranplanted into another R2 model body that did not feature the leg jets, thus keeping the memory intact and possibily even protected.

Welcome to SD.net. *chucks egg*

There really isn't much of a point to using the jets in the OT. In ROTJ, a fall like that wouldn't have caused any damage. In TESB, Do you really believe that the jets would have helped against Yoda's telekinesis?

Guri_ps12:
Possible but unlikely in my opinion. It would require a very special damage. We saw that R2D2 and C3PO were repaired after suffering extrem damages. Actually I canot imagine such a damage.
Besides we do not know whether it is a modification to R2D2 (Who did it and why?) or all R2s can fly. (Terrifying but possible too.)
Maybe ep III ...

Darth Yoshi:
"a fall like that wouldn't have caused any damage"- it is unrealistic. A fall from thirty cms wouldn't cause any damage to your walkman. Does it mean that you do not care whether it falls or not?
No mechanical structure enjoys falling. Neither a walkman nor a tank.

Of course I do not believe that the jet engines could help it against Yodas' will. It would be useless. I know. You know. Everybody knows. But R2 didn't!

Would like to start by saying that my theory is simply speculation, however considering the widespread use of the R-series astromech droid line in the SW universe, it would stand to reason that there would also be an abundant supply of replacement or even interchangeable parts available with different features, or lack thereof.

Taking into consideration all the damage that R2 and 3PO received during the films (notable occurrences include; 3PO in ESB at Cloud City, and R2 in the Endor ground battle), it would be difficult to believe that from the time of Epi. 1 through ROTJ and beyond, that all the equipment and parts on each of them would be original; either from being broken off, worn down, or just becoming plan unusable.

Reply with any thoughts.

BTW thanks for the greeting Yoshi
