We saw Quarren in both ANH and ROTJ.

I've always assumed that Thrawn was left until near the end of the Clone Wars, when the Empire was bron. Then, with the war pretty much over, Palpatine was able to start his search for Thrawn.

Much like the British did in naming ships after flowers.

How embarassing would it be to be sunk by HMS Pansy?

Besides the point of a Grand Admiral in the conference room and he seems he should have the most power in that room until Vader and Tarkin come in. It also seems in ANH Tarkin is more powerful than Vader or more respected, it could just be that since its Tarkins battle station he holds more power.

and if you take the time to notice, it seems that other than the Imp senate being disbanded and falling apart it seems this very conference room is falling apart. Some close ups of the Imp officers, mostly Tarkin you can see the background "cardboard" walls shaking and looking like there about to fall over.

Did you read the thread? He wasn't a Grand Admiral. He was a colonel in the ISB.

Actually, it is the ISB for Imperial Security Bureau, but the point stands. There was no Grand Admiral in ANH.

I know. Sorry, but I really didn't want to confuse anyone further when I had just seen that someone else was confused. It was a nitpick. So sue me.

ISB-Colonel Yularen was essentially political secretary to Grand Moff Tarkin; he was despatched to the Death Star in order to ensure (a.) that the Grand Moff was properly briefed on Internal Security Bureau concerns; and (b.) that the Grand Moff demonstrated sufficiently loyal behaviour. To wit, Colonel Yularen simultaneously functioned as the ISB's personal representative to the Grand Moff and as a spy.

He was a member of the Grand Moff's personal staff, and did not hold a position affiliated with the station itself (although he nominally held equal rank with the three chiefs of operations). He was not the head of the sipo apparatus aboard the station, and was not in the operational or even administrative chain of command; in fact, the ISB sipo and thinkpol apparatus is not even mentioned in the comand organisation tables presented in the Death Star Technical Companion.

If he'd been a GA, he'd have had the gold trim (or whatever) on his shoulders.

At least you have an up close picture to confirm that.

Yeah, forgot the whole part about the IBS thing (been a while since I read the whole thread)

nonetheless, we are left with these observations

- the DS 1 had an ISB officer
- his name was Space Cowboy
- he wants Rick Berman to rot in hell
- kids should listen to him

In a lot of shots from the Thrawn trilogy comic books, Thrawn didn't have gold trim on his shoulders. Just the white uniform. I think the rank badge is wrong for a Grand Admiral though.

ISB-Colonel Yularen's uniform is different from that of a grand admiral. As can be seen from observation elsewhere in the film, ISB officers wear white/cream-coloured tunics, black trousers, and black shoes -- note that the ISB personnel seen do not wear the standard Imperial jodhpurs and jackboots as do the Army and Navy commissioned officers.

In all known depictions of Grand Admiral Thrawn or his colleagues, the consistent fashion shown is a white tunic, white jodhpurs, and black jackboots. At times, the officer is shown wearing a rank plaque, and at other times, not wearing such. Similarly, the use of epaulettes is also inconsistent, but such may be left to personal preference. It is of potential noteworthiness that the United States Navy uniform regulations promulgated in 1864 specified that whilst epaulettes were to be worn on certain uniforms, the use thereof was to be suspended until after the present war was resolved.
