OK, I'll have to assume that the SW galaxy is about 100,000 LY in diameter, that Coruscant is roughly near the center, and that Tattooine and Naboo are near the very edges, because no distances are quoted for them.
100,000 LY? No its bigger than that at least 300,000 to prehaps as much as 1mil LY wide
That works out to a 50,000 LY trip from Coruscant to Tattooine or Naboo. For a 24-hour trip, that works out to about 2000 LY/hour -- 20 times faster than the 100 LY/hr I quoted initially, but about 40 times slower than 2 million LY/day.
Assuming of course there is absoutly nothing in the way

Which never happens...
You keep forgeting every single Star/Planet Astroid Belt you have to detour around, there are no STRAIT LINES in Hyperspace except when traveling between Galaxys, Speaking of which that was the purpose of the OutBound Project that several Jedi Masters went on along with a large OR ship, Considering the Five Year time Frame of the Project(Its reference all through-out EU but WEG quotes it as a five year project) that means say take the closest Galaxy to us Andromida I belive clocking in at 2.2 Million LY from us and they expected to be there in less than two weeks....
Unfourtantly for everyone though Thrawn intercepted them in the Outer rim and destroyed the ship
Also, Tarkin's comment about Alderaan being a more "suitable target" than Dantooine in ANH (IIRC, something about Dantooine being "too remote") seems to imply that Alderaan is much closer to the Core Systems, if not a Core System itself. That would lend more credibility to the "opposite ends" being symbolic rather than physical.
I'll stop you there we do have a *map of sorts aviable in the back of NJO books which places the systems at opposte ends of the Galaxy and there is a WEG map I belive, however I don't have access to either ATM

Dantoine I know however is in one of the ARMS of the galaxy while Alderaan is indeed in the core worlds, or rather was

Another example is the fact Scout ships sent from the DS made it from Alderran to Dantonnie and back in less than 2 hours as another speed refreance
MF outside the Rim (+10,000 LY) to Tattooine: first, where's the 18-hour trip listed? Second, which direction are they flying? If it's straight out from Tattooine, then it's maybe a max of
The Novelisation, *just over half a day, Second they are flying through the Galaxy. Third Scalling places them at over 500,000 LYs away.(Thats how far you have to be for the galaxy to look that size)

I'll skip the rest as you keep forgetting the first thing I said

THERE ARE NO STRAIT LINES

Hyperspace travel must avoid every single gravitonal object by a wide margin least they get to close and be hauled out of Hyperspace and Destroyed.

You assuming absoutly nothing in the way when calcuatlion speeds
And that except in an idealsed senarior never happens

It's 120,000 of their lightyears (which are about 5% longer than ours) across. (Shield of Lies)

Thanks for every bit of input. It is all muchly appreciated.

What size of crew and rank of commander would be in charge of an orbital defense platform? It's not exactly an exciting job.

What kind of information would an ISD receive on the state of the Imperial Fleet on any given day? ie Ships in dock, Ships on patrol, Status of Fleet preparedness, Rebel ship sightings or engagements... you know generally useful tactical data. Would an ISD receive only information relevant to her sector? All info I assume would be encoded.

Thanks again folks

See? This is why I need to read NJO even if some of the books are crappy as hell and I have to get around to reading Black Fleet to one of these days :D

So I was wrong on that point.. GASP! That makes number three on points I've had to concede, One to Darkling, One to I think Ralph, and now one more :D

One per month is nb :D

Anyway onto your question
What size of crew and rank of commander would be in charge of an orbital defense platform? It's not exactly an exciting job.
Golan Stations are acutaly pretty well maned as they are self contained citys if a little on the smallish side, The Three and four are bigger of course and as for the crew normaly they are Navy fokes as agian Lucus Copys another part of RL as thier Navy does Tours of Duity inculding time spent on stations

So basicly it depends just like any SW Imperial Ship the crew could be very good or just decent(The very bad are killed remeber? :P)

Keep in mind each station is Hyperwave equiped meaning the Crew has access to a Holo-net which means a Galaxy wide amount of POrn/games/whatnot to distract them :D

Depends on the ship and the Deployment, There is general information all ships recive and Sector specfic for others, some ships get more information that others(Like Sector news for Adjacent Sectors as well as the normal) though any cap-ship Captian can get as much news as they want as long as they have a Hyperwave transmitter aboard(They are very expesnive though, minture verisons are more expesnve than a squadren of A-Wings accorind to Wedge though the Larger Ship Versions are less expensive on anything less than a Corvette they are considered Luxury)
All info I assume would be encoded.
Increably so, codes are switched on a day by day basies plus additonal codes for during battle though SW Tech has advnaced to the point that anycode even the one the Emperor used to communcate with Courscant from the DSII can be broken within a month or two
