If I capture the hero's starship, I will keep it in the landing bay with the ramp down, only a few token guards on duty and a ton of explosives set to go off as soon as it clears the blast-range. But it came within a hair's breadth of suceeding, even though the Imperials (specifically Grand Moff Tarkin) made sevaral mistakes that cost them the Death Star, like not launching fighters as soon as they saw the Rebels coming, and when they finally did launch, it could not have totaled more than a single squadron of TIEs, rather than the thousands upon thousands the Death Star would logically be able to carry. And that worked out really well, didn't it
Still, it might have been safer to go with explosives.
What you would need is an explosive device small enough to be hidden on the Falcon without being discovered, but powerful enough to flatten the entire Yavin base. Given SW tech (i.e. Teraton-level HTLs), I don't see why the Empire could not have such an explosive.

The reason Tarkin didnt launched enough fighters was just arrogance. Nothing more, nothing less

Yeah, but who would have expected the plucky, loveable heroes with the highly improbable plan would win the day?wautd wrote:Well if you've build the ultimate weapon, what is the point not to use it

Well at least one officer did and IIRC he suggested Tarkin to flee with his shuttle. Personally, if I was in Tarkin's place, I would have launched all my fighters because the Superlaser didn't have a very fast recharge rate. We can't have rebel ships managing to take off from Yavin, now can we?
Now, back to Endor....
Had I been in charge of the Endor garrison, or even the construction of the Shield generator, I would have had the area subject to a BDZ action within a 30 kilometer area. No tree's for cover for the rebels.
Either that, or if the Emperor didn't like that idea, biological and chemical weapons ready to deal with the expected intruders.
i.e radio tagged 'gnarls' (or whatever they were called from the Thrawn trilogy), spraying the area with knock out gas after the rebel shuttle landed, or a really fun virus to knock them all out. I can just imagine the fun types of flue the Empire has access too.
In space, barring the 'Will of the Force/George Lucas', Vader could have had the Shuttle dealt with in a number of ways
1- Let them land, track the shuttle down, then have Tie Bombers drop a shit load of sonic weapons over there heads, followed by stormtroopers. Powerful enough sonic weapons would do wonders to the rebels equilibram, not to mention possible knock them out
2- "Ion Cannon batteries, manually target the shuttle as it approaches Endor. Ion Cannon batteries, fire!"
3- Lock a tractor beam 'Stand by for Inspection and Review, we expected this shipment 12 hours ago. You are late fella, this is going on your service record'.
And my personal favourite
4- "Shuttle Tyderian, were sending you landing co-ordinates. I suggest you follow them, the automated Anti-Aircraft defenses haven't been fully programmed, and were experiencing problems with them. They've already shot down 4 assault shuttles that went off course"
And have stormtroopers waiting under cover....

Given it still took a neopythe Force user who happened to be Vader's son to deliver the killing blow...I'd say he was well within his arrogant right.
Hell the fact that Luke made the shot more or less proved Vader's statement in the movie...but if Luke wasn't there?
The Alliance would've been snuffed and Tarkin no the wiser of what could have happened.
In the end saying Tarkin was stupid about not unleashing more, is like saying Tarkin was being arrogant about a one in a quadrillion shot because anyone could've made that shot...theoretically.

perhaps you right but if it really was a one in a quadrillion shot i dont think the officer would bother to suggest there is some danger and that Tarkin might consider to flee his shuttle (which wouldnt be safe either with X-wings flying around). Therefore I think he knew there was a significant chance the rebels would succeedGhost Rider wrote:Did he?wautd wrote:Well at least one officer did and IIRC he suggested Tarkin to flee with his shuttle. Wedge one of their best pilots, and he had claimed it was impossible...only Luke offered a resistence to the statement.
Given Vader was easily handling the situation the whole thing comes down to...it was a lucky shot by a Force user.

It seems Tarkin was quite arrogant starting with not launching fighters to defend the Death Star. Remember those fighters launched were under Vader's direct commandStar Wars wrote:The Officer said We have anylized the attack sir and there is a danger. Shall I have your ship standing by?

They knew it was suicide...but they had no choice...it was either 1 in million or die.wautd wrote:also if there was 1 in a million chance i don't think the rebels would even tried a suicidal attack. Remember, before Yavin, the Empire didnt saw the rebel alliance much of a treat
