Well of course they do, but compare the other TIEs in that scene to the "last one."
I know what you're talking about. Experimental fuel works in this case. The way the fighter was hit by the laser could have also influenced it greatly.

The fact that it contued to explode may suggest a self-destruct mechanism? :?
