What about the revelation that benevolent Senator (later Chancellor) Palpatine is Darth Sidious? And that Sidious wasn't trying to take over the galaxy through the Separatists, but manipulating events so his alter-ego could usurp control of the Republic?

That actually is pretty obvious from the beginning of the PT. My parents, who didn't know the Emperor's name was Palpatine, complained after seeing Ep. I that Lucas made it too obvious that Senator Palpatine was going to become the Emperor and that there was no suspense. If they could figure out from a single casual viewing of TPM that Palpatine = Sidious = Emperor, then anybody could.

Eh, but they did know that there was going to be an Emperor, and they also knew it was Sidious (from his hood).
The OP is talking about showing the movies to people who have no idea what's going to happen at all.

Tbh I'm not certainly myself how obvious the Palpatine-Sidious connection is; I'd like the opinion of someone who has never laid eyes on any movie in the OT at all, nor heard anyone talking about it, ever, lest the words "Emperor Palpatine" had fallen upon their ears.


The "flashback" order idea (4 5 123 6) is interesting.
