Is there a specific quote dealing with this from the NJO, or is a compilation of quotes from different books?Glimmervoid wrote:The reason that the unknown regions are dangerous (according to NJO) is that a dark matter galaxy is crashing in to it. I would take that quote with a mega-dose of salt. First off NJO thinks the unknown regions are part of the galactic disk, we know from canon sources that its simply wrong. Second, the more than 90% of a galaxies mass is dark matter. The Milky Way gravity encompasses 500,000 light years, and is swimming with the stuff. Third, dark matter be definition consists of weakly interacting particles; even a galaxy of the stuff shouldn't be that much of a problem, galaxies are not very dense on average. I mean in a typical galactic collision stars do usually collide with one another. Fourth, hyperdrive is not that sensitive to gravitational distortions. Even with a stellar mass you have to be pretty close before kicking in the emergency cutoffs. The reason that the unknown regions are dangerous (according to NJO) is that a dark matter galaxy is crashing in to it. What canon source. If you are talking about the Jedi archive in AOTC then there is no contradiction with the galaxies being maps and the new republic having problems. Just because the Jedi has this information dose not mean they sheared it with the empire or that parts were not lost or damaged in the armed combat in the Jedi temple.Spartan wrote:Glimmervoid wrote:

Have Mike Wong or Curtis Saxton commented on the issues of the effect of dark matter on hyperspace travel, and the "extragalactic barrier" idea?
I'm extremely interested in hearing their opinions on this matter (PUN! PUN INTENDED!).

Disregarding the whole "Intergalactic" Banking Clan title and the Outbound Flight project, a clear mention of intergalactic traveling capability can be found in the Episode I: Journal series of Anakin Skywalker and Queen Amidala. In them, well-known hyperspace paths leading to other galaxies are recognized plainly enough that said travel does not amaze children of the SW galaxy, the Queen of Naboo even believes the Republic has some influence over their actions, at least.

A bunch of hyperspace trading routes meet here on Tatooine. This means we get visitors not only from our galaxy, but other galaxies as well.
I should say that when I discovered these books, AOTC was not in theaters yet, and I disregarded them with all my fervor. Yet now that we have acknowledgement that satellite galaxies do orbit the SW one, is it possible that what these two people are speaking of are the satellite galaxies?I have placed all my faith in the Republic. Quick question... from the AOTC scene in the library, how do we know those are really nearby "dwarf galaxies" and not just the computer showing us far away neighboring galaxies (of "full size") that appear small because of distance?
Or heck, to make it even worse, why couldn't it be a readout letting you view multiple galaxies and it just has "zoomed in" on the main galaxy for convenience? Does some EU source interpret this for us and if so which one(s)?

were those full size galaxies, then the relative distances shown means that the configuration should look totally different. Tidal forces would have distorted them significantly. Same issue with the explanation presented in the Force Heretic series.Kurgan wrote:Quick question... from the AOTC scene in the library, how do we know those are really nearby "dwarf galaxies" and not just the computer showing us far away neighboring galaxies (of "full size") that appear small because of distance?

Survivor's Quest took place in a globular star cluster, so I'd definitely say it left the disk.

That's impossible. A galactic-scale mass of dark matter would interact gravitationally with the STAR WARS galaxy exactly as a normal galaxy would. It would heavily distort and marr it. And galactic maps in the absolute canon preclude this.Glimmervoid wrote:The reason that the unknown regions are dangerous (according to NJO) is that a dark matter galaxy is crashing in to it. Not to mention, galactic-scale masses of dark matter would still not make hyperspace travel impossible unless it was more dense than individual star systems, which hyperdrive still functions within.

Um, the main Vong force was desperate to get into the conquer the galaxy and make themselves a new home. A lot of their ships were dying anyways, and I doubt that they would taken the time and energy to "blockade" the galaxy, and even if such a feat could be achieved, which it couldn't, what purpose would it serve? Not fully, but at certain points, yes. After all several ships are getting through.

Could Star Wars in fact be set in a cluster of galaxies, consisting of one large one and several smaller ones of varying sizes?Imperator Galacticus wrote:Disregarding the whole "Intergalactic" Banking Clan title and the Outbound Flight project, a clear mention of intergalactic traveling capability can be found in the Episode I: Journal series of Anakin Skywalker and Queen Amidala. For the simple fact they were waiting for the Empire to be weakened enough to invade. The New Republic did not have the will to build the massive fleets and ships needed. The Vong simply waited at predetermined points and destroyed any ship that stumbled onto them. Their agents prepared the way.

It is implied throughout all the books that deal with the Vong in one way or the other. It also makes perfect military sense. Had the Vong slammed into Palpatine's Empire they would have been smashed to pieces. They had planned for an earlier conquest but Palpatine usurped them by starting the Clone Wars.

So were the Vong a desperate dying race that had no other choice but to press on into a galactic invasion war, or were they greedy invaders who bidded their time in order to make the galactic takeover as easy as possible for themselves? Or does the NJO present both ideas without really saying which was the "right" one?rommel17 wrote:It is implied throughout all the books that deal with the Vong in one way or the other.
