I think the only scene when an SD was firing it's HTLs or MTLs was
during the chase of the Tantive IV. The corvette took one direct hit and it bashed through her shield and detonated a generator by distroying the solar panel. Or something like this. So it was a powerful blast or there was the weak spot of the corvette's shield.
But Vader wanted to capture the ship rather than destroying it. So they fired single shots.

When the Millenium Falcon turned against the Avenger I'm quite sure the impys used these point defense cannons instead of HTLs with slow turret turning rate.
Before that event the Falcon got a direct hit from the Avenger and it wasn't a HTL hit either. It took out completely the rear shields but did minor damage in the ship.

Or maybe it was a low charged HTL hit?

But then again the objective was to capture the ship not to destroy.

We haven't seen any capital ship battle in the OT which was out of point-blank range.

Correct me if you think it's false.

So when did we see SDs firing HTLs?

ROTJ, at the battle of endor. There is a brief scene where Ackbar is giving orders to concentrate firepower, in the background you can see an ISD, and from its left side is seen a quite lengthy bolt fired. Im guessing this is a HTL, you also see two red bolts just as large streak in and blow it to pieces

Aye but I'd have liked it much better if an ISD had cut one of those dumb fishpeople-ships to ribbons.

Those were most certainly NOT the same gun the Sail Barge had. Go back and look for yourself, The one on the Sailbarge was double barreled, and a bit smaller with an overall different design. Just look at the Star Wars ICS, or check the movie again. They are quite different

I was under the impression that the Death Star twin turret tower guns are one of the forms of MTL and the ones we see pictured with the gunners are either LTL's or point defense laser cannons. However, since the Death Star was designed with heavy cap ship defense strategy in mind, Im guessing they are more likely LTL's. Either way, they explain the single shots we see in ANH,
"The Cosmos is expanding every second everyday, but their minds are slowly shrinking as they close their eyes and pray." - MC Hawking
"It's like a kids game. A morbid, blood-soaked Tetris game..." - Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs)

Damn right Frank, would have faaar prefered to witness the power of an ISD in full combat, ripping a MonCal to pieces with precision fire. Instead we see the death of an ISD.....damn rebels...
