A shield system's ability to withstand damage is limited by its ability to reradiate absorbed energy and ability to store absorbed energy until it is radiated away. Heat sink and radiator capacity are the limits on it. Being based on a planet gives a lot more options (more surface area for radiators; pumping heat into the mantle or something) for durability. Presumably the larger the shield, the more power it requires. Yavin's shield was powered by an ISD's reactor and could withstand a battleship's barrage; the Hoth shield could hold off a relatively large fleet indefinitely.
