General, no offence, but any sort of news on the "big box set" is complete and total bullshit. It has not been announced, there has been no news about it. It is not coming out in December 2006. And as far as I know, it is not coming out anytime in 2007, even.
Basically, your retailer was either lying or misinformed.
Lucasfilm does indeed have plans to eventually release a big boxed set of all six films with more extras (specifically, I think they've said that the set would include OT deleted scenes), but they do not plan to release it in the very near future; within the next year and a half. I believe they've said that it wouldn't come out until at LEAST sometime in 2008.
Update on Unaltered Original Trilogy DVDs...
