Excellent! I seem to remember Curtis Saxton wanting to do this quite a few years ago. But the man is much busier than I am at the moment!Phil Skayhan wrote:This is a great idea. I'll look through the supplemental material on the Original Trilogy LDs to see if they give any information.

Quake's pretty limited as far as maximum size of maps is concerned. I think before Team Arena, the max map size was a few hundred metres in any direction.Lord Poe wrote:I was at first. Then I began thinking about a Quake or VGR "Elite Force" level to walk around, or hell, even a Jedi Knight level.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I remember there being a bunch of stuff in Darksabre concerning junk like escape pods or something.
So, are there going to be images made of the possible layout of systems? I'm actually excited about how it'll turn out already.
There's plenty of Elite Force mods which allow you to "tour" the E-D and Kirk's Enterprise.
But I'm not a map maker. So I'll try to whip up an image map or something.
With Team Arena it a MUCH higher limit, but making an ISD would be a nightmare.

Agreed, if we made the ENTIRE thing. But a few major areas would be nice. I remember those huge Death Star levels for DOOM all those years ago!Sardaukar wrote:Quake's pretty limited as far as maximum size of maps is concerned. If you people are going to make a 3D map it makes much more sense to make something in a standardized mesh format rather than a gaming level. Standardized formats can be used for both 3D rendering/animation and converted for game use. Game maps are pretty much useless as anything other than game maps.

There's an ambitious project underway at the moment to make an insanely detailed ISD model somewhere on the internet, search google, or wade through the 3d modelling site on TFN and you'll find it.Enlightenment wrote:If you people are going to make a 3D map it makes much more sense to make something in a standardized mesh format rather than a gaming level. Some other guy was doing a hangar of an ISD as well, he worked out a really good way of launching the TIEs. I think he gave to work on the former project.
If I can be bothered finding the site(s) again I'll put links up soon

Octal is an adjective describing a type of electrical plug, or base-eight mathematics. It would appear that "You are located on deck 50 in the mid octal of the ship." is a meaningless statement. Perhaps they meant "octant?"Lord Poe wrote:The Stele Chronicles

Does anyone know WTF an "octal" is, and where it would be on the ISD?
Clear Ether, Currald
All I know is that it's got something to do with eight.

Octal: oc-tal, adj: of, relating to, or being a number system with a base of eight. It would appear that "You are located on deck 50 in the mid octal of the ship." is a meaningless statement. Perhaps they meant "octant?"
An octal is like a "quadrant", I guess.... a Star Destroyer is divided into eight primary sections? Bridge tower, reactor, port and starboard main gun areas, living superstructure, primary hangar, secondary hangar, and storage, perhaps?

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) has a excellent section called "Boats for Beginners" here, which ought to provide a guide to the correct terminology (e.g., ships have decks, bulkheads, overheads, compartments, and passageways, not floors, walls, ceilings, rooms, and corridors).
The article does not address certain other terms, such as "dorsal," "ventral," "before," and "abaft," but such terms are usually self-explanatory, in any event. When an officer says to "lay aft here," it is fairly obvious that he means "come back here."

This sounds like an incredible project, yet extremely difficult. Let's face it - there is little clearcut descriptions of exactly what goes where, save for bridge layouts and the like. Either way, I would be very interested in seeing some mapping out of major potions of the ship, and would be willing to assist with 3D modeling if it came to that point. I'm wary, but sign me on.

Check out The Stele Chronicles. They detail an area of a destroyer that contains shops and recreational areas. Apparantly this is where the civilian personnel of the ship hang out.generator_g1 wrote:I was wondering, do SD's have any sort of recreational facilities for the crew, if so, where will those facilities be on the ship and what's in them?
And unlike a tiny GCS, on a mile-long destroyer, having civilian personnel does make some sense.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

It should be noted that civilian personal on an ISD does not include children. (unlike on the GCS)Robert Treder wrote:Check out The Stele Chronicles. Recreational areas must exist. The crew would perform very poorly without them on long missions.
