And uh...yeah right, Palpy just happens to know how to create life...and oh! Look! Your wife is dying...i just happened to know that, even though there is no conceiveable way that i could possibly have found out. Riiight. I'll buy that for a dollar
What the hell is wrong with that?
Palpatine possess the only means by which Padme can survive, and thus Anakin is drawn further towards the dark side. And as for him knowing?

The Force. Ooooooooooooooooooooo!
Honestly, if Palpy is more poweful than Yoda, and Anakin is opening himself fully to him, then how could he not know?

Well...he could not know cause Force users cant read minds. As far as i know, if you knwo of soem EU source that says otherwise i stand corrected of course, but as far as i know no one, not even Yoda, has ever shown such an ability.
Also, all in all i must say the good outweighed the bad by a huge margin. For me, this one is up there with the best in terms of entertainment, like TESB and ID4 two great action movies in and of themselves. Or Attack of the Clones, which was also very good. Lucas started off shaky with TPM, but he pulled himself back up with AOTC and totally redeemed himself with ROTS.

"Your sister? Ah yes, you have a twin sister...."
Vader can do it, and Palpatine can directly communicate with Mara Jade through her mind, even over extreme distances (Tales from Jabba's Palace.)
Overall I was disappointed with the film. While not complete garbage like TPM or full of poor writing like AOTC, it simply could have been better. Certain scenes (the opening, the turn, Padme's death) SHOULD have been full of power, and just seemed poorly handled. I was literally falling asleep through some parts of this movie, and Lucas' 'lets constantly cut between largely unrelated things' got annoying in the middle.
However, I won't complain that much about the turn. Sure, George is a hack and I've seen similar character work done far better in other movies, but the way they made it obvious that Palpy was crushing his will with the Force was cool.
I actually thought the purge was lame. I personally blame the music: the twin sunset end (although dragged out) worked well because the music worked.
Its a shame the movie shifts between signs of power (like the Anakin-Obi Wan faceoff before their fight) to a largely uninteresting, dialogueless fight. I also felt that the rushed way many plotpoints were tied off was weak.
18-Till-I-Die wrote:Man...was that conversation between Anakin and Padme near the begining awkward. "Oh yeah i had a dream where you died." i was like, what? You're telling this to your pregnant wife why?
Because she told him to. He very obviously didn't want to talk about it, but she was clearly upset that he wasn't telling her. "You have to start trusting me," she said.
Final thoughts: Good movie. I thought Grievous was generously lame, however. His voice irked me alot. His coughing fits, while continuitous(word? it is now) also filled me with... irk.
One thought I have is, when Obi-Wan and Anakin are fighting on the plaform/droid over the lava, how is it that they are controlling where it's going? Through the Force? It seems like the two would want to concentrate almost exclusively on the duel.
I don't recall with any detail whether or not the platform stops and then Obi-Wan jumps off onto the rock face, or if leaps from the moving platform and then it stops. It might give some insight onto who was controlling the platform's movement.
Regarding the Purge- I thought the editing on that blew.
Anakin marches in and starts owning stuff -- then they cut to some unrelated boringness.
Order 66: part with Ki Adi Mundi was set up pretty cool, with the proto-snowtroopers stopping, lining up, and opening fire. But the scene is cropped so you can never see everything at once, and it cuts away too quickly.
In Secura's part, they shoot her and then start blaster-spaming her corpse, which takes no apparent damage from the numerous shots hitting it, and then half the screen is obscured by a large plant for a few seconds.
Part where the Jedi in a figher is shot down, when Palpatine is shown issuing the order YET AGAIN, it really became somewhat grating.
I thought the segment was cool overall, but it had little emotional impact and I thought it could have been vastly improved without a great deal of effort.
Aside from making it longer (maybe showing more Jedi, giving Aayla back her line), I didnt think the Purge could have been better. It was very emotional for me.
As a person trying to get over a chest cold, I can honestly say that I sympathized with General Grievous... *cough*
I think the single most powerful scene in the movie was during the battle at the Jedi Temple, when Vader walked into the room where the younglings were hiding. A little boy asks him for help, and he just ignites his lightsaber...you could honestly feel the last shreds of desperate hope for Anakin whither and die.
Also very good: Windu's death. Yes, you saw it coming, but it was fantastic. The Jedi Purge was heartbreaking. I think Ki-Adi-Mundi had the best death. He leads the charge, his men suddenly stop, he turns with a quizzical look that turns to understanding and horror and he goes down swinging under a hail of fire from his treacherous men.
The Clones' betrayal of Obi-wan was gutwrenching as well. One moment they're comrades, the captain handing over the lightsaber, the next, he gives the order to gun Kenobi down. No pity, no remorse, no hesitation, just cold, ruthless efficiency.
The appearence of the Tantive IV was unexpected, but a pleasant surprise. Bail Organa's role was slightly different than what I'd expected, but also done well.
I wish I could have added just one line to the movie. When Obi-wan and Yoda are plotting to go after the Sith and Yoda starts to leave, I think it would have been great of he'd stopped for a moment and said: "Two battles to be waged, there are. Two masters and two apprentices. Balanced, the Force is."
That would have been so powerful because it would have proved the prophecy right, but in a horrifying and dark way, perfect for the mood of the movie.
Doesnt Greveious' coughing and stuff link directly to Clone Wars then? In Clone Wars, Mace crushed part of his chest before he escaped with Palpatine. Now he has a cough, though his chest seems to be largely repaired.

Whatever the reason, I liked the cough. It humanized Grievous. He wasn't just a monolithic force with great strength and speed, though that was obviously the image he wanted to project. He was a person, with his own beliefs, desires, weaknesses...it detracted from him as a villain, but made him far more interesting as a person.
I thought the coughing was cheesy as hell. I stared and was like.. "Wait. Why make one super droid, if you can mass-produce generals? I didn't know a Droid could have Bronchitis.
They didn't really explain those until when he's about to die anyway, so I thought the cough was just more cheesy kiddy-stuff until we saw he was a cyborg.
Firefox wrote:... So his eyes and the fact that he was coughing didn't give it away that he wasn't entirely mechanical? I don't recall any of the droids coughing.
This was before I saw the eyes. And yes. The coughing could be attributable to whoever thought it was a good idea to make the SBDs sound like six year olds inhaling helium.

Gwahh, that would be so lame, particularly since that's not at all what the prophecy is about. Sounds more like a punchline to a joke.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

"And besides, who cares if a monster destroys Australia?"
That's what came to my mind when they talked about the Prophecy in previous movies though. "Wait. If there's a hundred thousand Jedi.. and two sith. Doesn't 'balance of the force' mean ninety-nine thousand, ninehundred and ninety eight dead Jedi?"

Windu has similiar speculations in the novelizations, about whether or not the Jedi have allowed too much light over the darkness.
The people who criticize Anakin's seemingly sudden fall are missing the point. I agree it could have been done better, but you should not look at that scene as if it were a normal non-Jedi being corrupted by really disturbing events. This is all about The Force, and once you start allowing the Dark Side into your mind, it takes hold of you and warps your whole personality. You do not act like a rational person; the Emperor does not have to present a convincing rational argument once he's gotten the Dark Side into your mind.
The problem is somehow showing this, since films tend to show concepts by either making characters say dialogue or using some sort of visual effect. I'm not sure exactly how you would convey that.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment!

Fucking christ... Reading most of these "reviews" reminds me of why I stay away from most of SW fandom in general. Change the fucking rag, ladies. You've been weaned on too much over the top cartoons and "Matrix" movies to appreciate subtle storytelling that doesn't bash you over the head, or run up to the screen and say, "now THIS is why were doing THIS..."
"Oooh, Anakin and Padme, baaaaad acting again!"
"Oooh, Darth Vader acting like a little bitch, screaming NOOOOO! and stumbling around. Why doesn't he flip off the table like my favorite anime character ready to kick ass?"
"Oooh, not enough blood and gore during the purge scene! Where's the bullet-time and John Woo stuff?"

Very true.
I'm suprised that no one's mentioned the old "All three films should have been Vader killing Jedi" insanity.......oh, wait, several have.
Well i thought the transformation of Anakin to Vader was fucking brilliant. I loved how they tied the birth of the twins to the 'birth' of Vader.
Plus i think i wet myself when Vader started talking like James Earl Jones. For a long time fan of the OT, to FINALLY get to see Vader in the Pt was like a freakin' christmas present.
Though i must say, you have to admit that Hayden whateverin's acting hasnt...shall we say, gotten better...it's gotten, whats that word? Oh yeah, worse.

Not at all. In AOTC, I was pulled out of the moment regularly by badly delievered lines and false emotion. In this, that barely happened at all. I thought his performance improved enormously. Nataile on the other hand......

Whining crybabies. I thought Hayden and Natalie were good in both films.
