By end of ROTJ I meant that is where the new stories will start, not that the EU before the movies should be kept. I'm just indifferent about it because it is mostly the purvey of games and comics.

If there was some confidence they would pull off a decent reboot that would probably be a good idea. however I suspect that the recycled shit that has surfaced with some of the last 'story arcs' like legecy of the jedi or whatever the fuck it was where Jacen turned out to be another Sith Lord (SHOCKS) and Jaina was a Mando Trained Jedi Killer don't fill me with a great deal of confidence.

They really need to just get away from the all-inclusive, repetitive, 'always save the galaxy every new book' crap. REmember there are planets other than Tattooine, Dagobah, Bespin, Mon Calamari, etc. and invent some new shit. I dont' even care if they do what was used to be called 'minimalist' shit. I've never worreid quite as much about the minimalism as some people (I even liked alot of the WEG stuff. Publius could always make the WEG material literally sing in his own writings. Man that was great.)

I'd love to see more stuff along the lines of Allston's Wraith Squadron, or the Rogue Squadron novels even. Or the old Brian Daley Han Solo novels. Those rocked.

In a proper reboot, Leia and Han don't even have to be together and have kids. Wrap your grey matter around that. :D

And the Daley Han novels indeed rocked and are some of the best EU books out there.

Why?

Because they are just about Han, Chewie and his hot rod doing some cool, wacky and weird shit.

I'd actually avoid staying away from the 'major' SW movie characters unless we were dealing with small scale stuff like the Daley novels. Covering Leia's time as a Senator or a Rebel. Missions Luke ran for the Rebellion. Han Solo's smuggling career. Lando Calrissian's adventures (the stories were rather odd, but I kind of liked them for their quirks and their ability to stray from the epic.) Star Wars novels, especially the post ROTJ stuff, tended to focus too much on 'epic' There was either some galaxy/Republic Destroying threat, or the Empire was plotting something, or the Empire was resurging from the AShes as the REpublic fell (yet agin). By the fifth or sixth time shit like this happens (usually all at once) your patience and suspension of disbelief is broken. Especially when its the same handful of characters doing the saving. This was actually one of the major flaws of the Yuuzhan Vong war stuff (aside from the Vong themselves.)

Post ROTJ stuff should sometimes be epic scale (or at least have some epic stuff in the background) whilst focusing on other characters as they play a role in the bigger picture. The x-wing and Clone Wars onvels followed that pattern and usually were okay. Or stuff like "Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor" - that or Death Star remain some of my more favorite current novels.

And if they DO want to do epic stuff, they take a page from the Thrawn Trilogy and let only established 'good' SW writers like Allston or Zahn or Stover or Luceno write it. I wouldn't trust anyone else to. (Although with Zahn you have to keep him away from MAra Jade or Thrawn or the Chiss in general. With a cattle prod if neccessary.)

Barring that we clone an army of Brian Daleys.

I would agree that some of the EU books do take a couple of characters and make an "epic" out of nothing (children of the jedi arc being the most recent I read), whereas the Han Solo pre OT trilogy was brilliant as were the first 7 x-wing novels. Possibly when doing a reboot the thing to do would be to have potential authors write short stories to assess their talent and possibly avoid such things as Crystal Star happening again.
