To be fair, it wasn't just the Jedi that moved a fleet of Star Destroyers. The Massassi temples were "force amplifiers" :lol:

Anyone remember which author blew up the great temple in the last YJK book?

WTF? The Young Jedi Knights series had the Temple mutiliated pretty badly once, at the end of the first hexology. The Temple got pasted later.

All of the YJK books were written by KJA and his wife Rebecca Moesta.

No. He. Doesn't.

That is the extrapolation done by other authors. Luke said they had a pretty big territory, but it would probably be doted with a few garrisons and held together mostly by alliances Thrawn would have made with the 'natives' ... or was that Mara?

Either way, the danger was that if this was turned over to the Remenant they might take advantage of the huge influx of raw material, labour and breathing space to re-arm and eventually be used against the Republic. That is all.

It was other EU authors and fanboys who wanked up the Chiss to rediculous levels.

Completely inconsistent with the described effects.
Nope.
Alderaans shields withstood some 4 frames of the superlaser, the total event from shield impact to end of beam was 6 frames, thats 6.6e37joules, roughly the same as the shield, and the description wich talks about the eclipses firepower says:
========================
Pg. 88: The beam packs enough destructive power to shatter the most planetary shields and sear whole continents in a flash.
========================
-Dark Empire Sourcebook

So it seems to me that it is pretty consistant indeed, the Eclipse laser would just about overpower a planetary shield of Alderaans model and likely have a little energy left to sear continents and crack the crust of the planet and whatnot.

Also, if the shield withstood 4 frames it it removed 6e37j from the superlaser beam, yet the planet exploded with 1e38j of force, this can mean that the superlaser delivered 1e38joules in the two remaining frames rather than six, meaning that the superlaser is 3e38joules and the shield withstood 2e38joules.
Two points:
1) The DE SB also says Alderaan lacked a shield and that the SL works via technobabble. Don't know what factor that plays in here since I don't recall what it said exactly.

2) Saxton worked the DS SL out to be 3.4*10^38. Which fits with that shield figure.

As for how big that reactor would be; discounting the energy for propulsion, shields, grav wells, tractor beams, weapons, etc, that reactor (assuming that the Eclipse can only fire that once per day) would need to be ~50 kilometers in diameter.

You could try other shapes and numbers of smaller reactors, but I'm fairly certain that that won't work either.

So it appears that eiter it takes an asslong time to power that beam, or that the beam must be much weaker.
