Where did the Prequals go wrong? How would you improve them?

Has anyone actually sat through the commentaries on either TPM or AOTC? Or both, for that matter? If so, does Lucas offer any information on the writing decisions? - such as, why Qui-gon instead of Obi-wan, why the Gungans instead of the Mon Calamari (that's a personal pet peeve of mine), why Naboo instead of Alderaan etc.

he likes to have new environments and characters in each film. ESB--we have Hoth, Dagobah and Bespin. ROTJ--we have Endor and the DSII (and to a lesser extent, Jabbas Palace, which is a kind of environment unto itself). TPM--we have Naboo and Coruscant. AOTC--we have Geonosis and Kamino.

EpIII supposedly gives us new ones as well.

Each film also gives us a new type of environment--desert, swamp, arctic, metropolis, jungle, forest, water, etc.

I'd rather have Gungans and Naboo instead of Mon Calamari and Alderaan--makes the universe more varied and interesting and im sure we'll see both Alderaan and the Mon Cal in EpIII anyway (i think this was officially confirmed).

If that's the case then I'm fine with it. I'm kinda sick of Coruscant and Tattooine, y'know? The reason I wanted Alderaan is because we never see what it's like before it's destroyed. I wanted to see the Mon Calamari instead of the Gungans for the same reason I wanted Wookiees instead of Ewoks; because one is cool, the other is cute - coolness overrides cuteness.

I'd rather have aliens that were introduced in the OT than make up new ones that no-one likes.

minor EpIII spoiler: you, me and countless other fans will get our wish--the opening battle scene has been confirmed by official sources to feature a battle involving wookies!

And about time, too... I also heard that it would be a space battle (a continuation of the cartoon)? But spoiler-work isn't my forte.

well i myself am "spoiler free till episode III" but once in a while i read the interviews with McCallem and Lucas or whatever and they've been giving away a lot of secrets lately, some of which i wish i didnt know.

Just FYI--Peter Mayhew is returning as Chewbacca, likely for the previously-mentioned scene (which likely involves parallel cutting between Anakins space battle and a planetside ground battle with wookies). Again, this is all officially released info (and fairly widely known) but i wish they kept stuff like this secret. I've since stopped reading most interviews.

But we're getting off topic here.
