Look at all the Seperatists except the Nemodians. Look at Wat Trembor, especially.

This has hardly changed.
Neimoidians,
Of which we only saw the leaders of the Trade Federation, who have to deal frequently with the senate and would therefore benifit greatly from being fluent in the predominant language of the Republic.
Gungans,
Who share a planet with the Basic-speaking Nubians
Kaminoans,
Who seemed very concerned with showing the utmost hospitality to the Basic-speaking Obi-Wan and Jango
Watto,
Bilingual
and Dexter Jettster
I forget who this guy is.
just off the top of my head. There were a lot of English speaking aliens in the prequels.
Remember that the prequels focus more on the Core Worlds, where the Republic's influence was stronger and Basic would be more widely spoken than on the Outer Rim, where most of the OT took place.

I forget who this guy is.

Ah, now I rememember. Still, it makes sense that he'd speak Basic, too, living on Coruscant.

In one of the novels, Chewie and Leia hide out on Kashyyk. There, Leia encounters a Wookie who can (sort of) speak Basic. She remarks to Chewie how she never knew Chewie had a speech impediment...at which point the Basic-speaking Wookie informs her HE is the one with the impediment, albeit one that facilitates human style speech.

I suppose that would be someone who was particularly gifted at
languages...I know two, I'm fluent in English, though it is a second
language (I have a GR 12.9+ reading level...yes i was tested,
i'm not just making it up
) but my first language, Punjabi, I can
understand, because my parents speak to me in it, while i speak back in
english...ij used to be fluent, but all these year's of not using it have
made it more like a second language...

Also, although I'm taking Gr 12 French in Gr 10, I'm having so much
trouble that it's not even funny... :(

The novel is Heir to the Empire. And he couldn't speak basic. He spoke the wookie language, with an impediment that made it easier for humans to understand

You think Han's got it tough with Wookieese? What about C-3PO and Boush?

"Yoto yoto." 50 thousand, no less.

"Eh, yoto." Because [I'm] holding a thermal detonator!

I mean, what the hell? It's not like you could ever learn to translate this language. Speak it, sure, but translate? It's not like Chinese where various tones can alter the meaning of phonetically-identical syllables--Boush spoke all in monotones! And since Boush was princess Leia, that pretty much means that the language couldn't have contained any ultrasonic pronounciation that's impossible for humans to produce. And I don't think she was using any hand-gestures, but I could be wrong.
As for speaking that language... Hell, I bet I could do it.

Me: "Yoto to yoto"

Princess Padme "That is an extremely cogent argument. I couldn't have said it better if my palace orators had comprised their most elegant speech for me."

Me "Yoto."

Padme" You sure know the way into a woman's heart. And her luxurious-to-the-point-of-decadence panties."

"Osk Yoto"

Padme "OK, I will. But be gentle; I've never done that berfore."
"Gunslinger indeed. Quick draw, Bob. Quick draw." --Count Chocula

Boushh was actually a bit more verbose.

I think Leia's first line as Boushh more sounded like "De, eya te yotto," (or something - I left my tapes in CR) when she says "I have come for the bounty on this Wookiee."

We really don't know how Ubese grammar works at all, besides. Additionally, it's electronically processed, I think.

EDIT: for the "fifty thousand, no less" line ("yotto...yotto"), it could be thought of like this, for example:

Perhaps in Ubese, "yot" is fifty, and "to" is thousand" (or even 500 and 100, respectively, however the Ubese number system works), and say when an Ubese repeats a numerical value, it means something like "no less".

Still, that leaves "Eh, Yoto" for "Because [I'm] holding this/a thermal detonator."

My main point is that "Yoto," the word itself, is used in every sentence Boush says. It must be an incredible flexible word. Maybe it's the Ubese F-word? :D

YOTO!

And we'd never know what it was all about...
