You can see the gun rotating on its platform during the movie.Connor MacLeod wrote:REally? I must have missed that. Where was it from?Darth Wong wrote:The guns on the DS were in rotating enclosures.
It doesn't matter; the shape of the gun and the opening are such that it would be impractical to use that design if you intend to achieve a wide firing arc. ISD point-defense guns much be some kind of ball turret. They might project out the sides some more in non-broadside confrontations. Up close like that, ,keeping them recessed seems like a good idea. The guns in the ROTS seem to be firing out the fixed sidewall of the ship, and they would have an extremely limited firing arc. They can't be the same as the ISD point-defense guns of the original trilogy.
No doubt we'll get a better idea once the film comes out, but I've been expecting this ever since we saw that blurb on Hyperspace. That';s what I th ought of too. When that bolt hits the Separatist ship, you can apparently see what appear to be "shell casings" on some sort of ammo feed or rack near the guns.
PS. I'm still kind of annoyed that Hyperspace members didn't get to see the trailer before everyone else. Wasn't that one of the reasons I'm paying the money for the damned Hyperspace service? Argh.

"Jedi Attack Cruiser"- what a stupid name, it's Republic Star Destroyer, dammit ...
Anyway, can anyone see those twin barreld guns on the trench, on either side, near the front, or is it just me? Anyone got any info to scale the main guns with?

Well you aren't crazy, because I see them as well.Vympel wrote:The image of the Venator model here:

Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.

The more I look at that image, I realize the Venator's not as anemic as I originally thought. She's fairly wide, even between the notches. I'm still clueless as to the size, however.
I wonder about the possibility of a variant of that design, sans overblown midships notches. It would look a lot more like the Imperator design. The only issues would be the tail and oddball superstructure/bridge tower.

If you watch the teaser trailer again, you can see Anakin's fighter doing a fly-by of the port dorsal batteries of a Venator as they fire- it's probably less than 1km long. In comparison to the TF ships, I'm unsure.Stark wrote:So where are the sick neons and spinnaz? Eh?
Do we know how big the Venators are? The design suggests (to me, at least) something larger than a ISD. How do they compare to TF ships?

It does look like it's at least slightly shorter than a kilometer in length, judging from one of the battle shots. You can see a Venator fairly close in profile (with its dorsal turned towards the viewer) in front of a TF battleship. No idea how close it is to the battleship, however.
It's probably no smaller than 500m, and I'd say it's around the same length, if not 100m longer, than the Acclamator.

I've heard of 1km length for the Vendator, I don't know how true that is though.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

You mean the heavy tractor beam projectors?Star-Blighter wrote:The ISD in particular has guns near the hangar that look almost like dishes in design (with the turbolaser in the center of the dish). These guns can fire off-axis of the barrel.

Saxton identifies those as turbolasers, but who knows?McC wrote:You mean the heavy tractor beam projectors?Star-Blighter wrote:The ISD in particular has guns near the hangar that look almost like dishes in design (with the turbolaser in the center of the dish). In the EGTWT, it's described as a tractor beam. The Original Nex wrote:Saxton identifies those as turbolasers, but who knows?McC wrote:You mean the heavy tractor beam projectors?Star-Blighter wrote:The ISD in particular has guns near the hangar that look almost like dishes in design (with the turbolaser in the center of the dish). I believe turbolaser bolts have been seen to come out of them, they could be both.McC wrote:You mean the heavy tractor beam projectors?Star-Blighter wrote:The ISD in particular has guns near the hangar that look almost like dishes in design (with the turbolaser in the center of the dish). Where does that blue bolt in the first movie come from? It doesn't look like it was fired by anything, and there's a quick explosion where nothing appears to be.Rogue 9 wrote:You know what I'm suddenly reminded of? Clicky 1. Its not as if every single glowy pulse we see in Star Wars has to be a massless beam weapon (or a particle beam, or a missile, or whatnot.) Anyhow, the point is, we see alot of glowy pulse like things. So that nails the idea of those guns being light turbolasers then?

What, those green explosions where nothing is? Those happen all through the Battle of Endor and I've never seen a satisfactory explanation for them. Be right back with a video of more of those green things.Jadeite wrote:Where does that blue bolt in the first movie come from? As for the blue "bolt," consensus is that it's a capital ship torpedo.
Edit: Ph34r the unexplained green explosions!
Edit2: There's also a fireball with no apparent source in this movie, dead center between the frigate and Executor, though it's not green and appears to have more substance to it than the green ones.
It's Rogue, not Rouge!

Its obvious those things were like that because ILM at the time was still pretty limited with the effects they could do so they likely just threw in a bunch of random filler explosive effects to jaz things up in the background.
Its one of those things I could see Lucas wanting to go back an fix some time. Honestly, if the battle over coruscant is as crazy as it seems like its going to be, I don't think he'll be able to leave the battle of endor alone like it is.

It's actually probably ok. Just wanted to remind you that I do have a bandwidth limit, even though it's very high.

Turbolasers with their tracers set to "no show"? There is some precedent for them.Rogue 9 wrote:What, those green explosions where nothing is?
