Don't judge the whole literature board based on a couple of knuckleheads-- on a whole, tf.net lit board is one of the best SW boards out there, and is certainly head and shoulders above the dreck that the other tf.n boards are.

Although I have noticed that in the past couple of months-- owing, most likely, to the release of RotS-- there's been an influx of new posters and a general drop in quality there. I don't visit as much as I used to-- nor, I notice, do very many other older posters. It's a shame.

Sorry, hung out there for 4 years, my impression of tf.net comes from alot of time spent there.

Gladius ... gladius ... I distinctly remember someone in TFN with the same name.

Generally, I see an increase in rationality. At least that Fingoldin_Noldor character seemed to change to a more pro-Saxton/rational stance.

One of the biggest problems is that the sucky people in the Lit. Board include their moderators!

But 120-160km feels about right to me.
And 900 feels "wrong" because....?
I'm gonna preface this with a disclaimer; I don't mind the 900km DSII size. Not one bit.

It's just the scale differential I'd imagine. For a comparison, it's like the UK having built their first Invincible class aircraft carrier - coming in at 20,300 tonnes displacement - which took a pretty long time to do, and then in six months building a Nimitz class aircraft carrier - coming in at 87,300 metric tonnes - practically overnight.

That, you would have to admit, would seem just a little off.

Yeah, I post there every couple of days as Gladiuus (Gladius was taken). Generally just off-the-cuff stuff-- I don't have the time or interest to take part in big debates. I do go for the Saxton-ish stuff though (I have a few issues with his work, but don't care to debate them).

There has been an increase in rationalism (just look in the Fleet junkie thread) but in the past few months, like I said, there's been a bunch of newer users there who spam incessantly and refuse to listen to logic. Look in the Republic Commando: Triple Zero thread-- it's growing by leaps and bounds due only to inane banter with the author (who must have the patience of a saint to put up with that crap).

There just doesn't seem to be as much discussion and debate on that board lately as there seems to be inane banter, unfunny jokes, and constant Waru references. And as good as this site is, it doesn't have the variety of users or the amount of traffic that the lit board has-- plus most here aren't very well versed with EU.

I agree-- that dp4m fellow in particular is irritating-- he wants his 12.8 km Ex back, for christ's sake, and bitched about Hard Contact because an RPG said that Verpine Shatter Guns existed only in the New Republic era. The2ndQuest is a decent guy though.

Out of curiosity-- if you post there, what name is it under? I want to say Daniel-K or Borleias-- both are obviously from this board as well.

True, I'd admit I don't think even Wayne Poe got that wide variety of EU exotics that Genghis12 has. Once, that bastard put up an interpretation of a quote from SWAJ5 (all the way back from fucking 1995) or something equally ultra-rare - and insulted us because we don't keep SWAJs all the way back to 1995 (never mind that unless you live in the States or maybe UK/Canada, the chances of you getting access to SWAJs is probably zero)! The interpretation, amusingly, hurt him more than us.

But we wanted his quote. He kept saying we were rude (actually, he was saying a guy calling himself LDB was rude but he's refusing to talk with us as well) and refusing. Eventually, a C'baoth gave us the quote. Needless to say, it bore little resemblance to what he said.

Actually, I almost prefer the guy's interpretation over the real thing - it is certainly more advantageous to us "maximalists".

Their arguments, frankly, don't make any sense to me. The correct way to prevent things from being thrown out is to somehow rationalize the inconsistencies. When this is impossible, they should use the best numbers available, and that means the movies. I seriously cannot believe that someone would be willing to throw out what we see on screen in favor of someone's literary descriptions. If an EU author went around claiming that all stormtroopers wore red, and that no white-colored stormtroopers existed, would they claim that he was correct and the films were wrong?

There are plenty of quotes from people associated with Lucasfilm to the effect that the EU, while largely valid, is not inerrant. These people are acting like religious fundamentalists, insisting that everything in the Scriptures must be absolutely and literally correct. Even, as Ned Flanders says, "the stuff that contradicts the other stuff."

I have always hoped that they (Lucas films) put a continuity clause in the canon at some point. So even if you could rationalise it and show there was no contradiction you could still chuck it out if it went against the sprit of other writings.

For example it would not be contradictory if an EU source claimed that R2-D2 was not the same droid in the PT as the OT but it would be against the sprit and would destroy continuity.

Too subjective; it'd be impossible.

I'd prefer if they appointed a continuity administrator to decide once and for all in a great purge what is and isn't part of continuity, and to make those decisions public and readily accessible to everyone.

Of course, this goes back to my frustration with the lack of any central definitive, non-vague-wishy-washy-arty-farty statement/ "legislation" on what is and is not canon, once and for all, in an easily accessible place on sw.com. Ideally, that legislation would also contain a clause declaring all other statements inadmissible for the purposes of determining what is and is not canon- i.e. "if its not on this page, it doesnt exist". The only definitive message we get out of the noise is "the EU counts". That's not good enough for me.

That is one place where Paramount has it over Lucasfilm- startrek.com leaves it quite uncontroversial. Lucasfilm is all over the bloody shop with statements about canon everywhere and anywhere you care to look.

I actually smacked his ass down on that point. I found the relevant quotes he didn't want to divulge..and for good reason. (I don't have the link to the smackdown, but I still have the smackdown itself!)

Wasn't that about some "rawmat-shortages" in the mid-rim?
