The answer is simple, the midichlorians react with hyperspace particles at higher elevations increasing with distance from a planetary surface!

Duh, any idiot knows that!

I can't think of a real non-SOD reason, sorry!

Like it or not, the EU stands as canon. You know that big-ass tank that was in ROTS? Brought forth in the EU, under the moniker of Juggernaut. Palpatine being this bad-ass of bad-asses, able to hold himself against pretty much the best? EU. General Grievous? Yup - EU. If it's got the Lucas logo on it and it doesn't contradict any established material, it counts.

As for that "nerd" shot, I think I'll leave that to the board's service members and paragons of social activity and participation...
Technically those above examples are all Lucas inventions that just happened to appear in the EU first, but were examples of G-level canon prior to their EU appearances (like concept art, designs, etc). Otherwise we can say "Boba Fett? EU!" and isn't Star Wars itself EU? Since the novel appeared before the movie? We can use that to prove any ridiculous thing...! Of course it's a nitpick, but there you go.

We're all nerds, don't deny it, just enjoy it.
