Ah, so the Death Star was indeed neccessary to terrorize worlds wealthy enough to afford full planetary shielding.
Oh, and a thought just struck me.. the Alliance fleet at Endor did not even consider the possibility of attempting to pierce the shield that protected the second Death Star as it was being built, so it is apparent that it can easily absorb that much firepower.

Back on topic (Vader!), it was Vader's idea to enslave the Wookie race.. interesting.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Tarkin's idea. Vader just carried it out.

And my point was, had Tarkin not made this deal with Vader, Vader might have thrown a fit and ordered a BDZ.

I dont recall it being mentioned, but were ALL Wookies on the planet enslaved, IE was a garrison and internment center installed onworld? I dont ever remember one way or another if Kashyyk was occupied after this, or if the Empire simply did a snach and grab and left.

If not, then the Empire could have rationalized that the number that they did take (however massive) were detained for assault upon Imperial Forces sentenced to hard labor.

And this would have been preferable to keeping the Senate pacified, as others have said, if the Wookies did control such an influential location as well as the voice of their sector

Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know...tomorrow."

Well the Wookiees did help Yoda escape so it may be related to them being in league with the vile Jedi.

One of the Han Solo books (It was either The Hutt Gambit or Rebel Dawn) has HAn trading with a Wookiee resistance group, which would imply there's an Imperial presence on Kashykk.

Immediately after the events of Dark Lord, prisoners numbered in the hundreds of thousands and were being sent out from camps near Kachirho.

Over the years, I'm sure many more slaves were gathered. The Imperials did not relinquish direct control of the system until sometime after RotJ. In Heir to the Empire, there are references to the world being freed in the recent past.

The operation that lead to it freeing was detailed in Galactic Battlegrounds.
I would suspect at this point, only a small number were enslaved and the rest of the world placed under an Imperial governor, but as others have noted, or time, more an more were taken, until the Empire simply began selling entire populations to the Hutts and Transdoshans en mass.

I think this makes a lot of sense. It'll be a decent excuse to have taken a large number of Wookies initially. Continuing resistance efforts by the Wookies provides an excuse for grabbing more of them over the subsequent decades.
