Lightsaber property question

Post by Baal »

I was curious about this.

Does a lightsaber carry any momentum when swung? IF Conan the Barbarian swings at Pee Wee Herman and Pee Wee blocks will he stop Conan's saber dead or will he get crushed down to the ground by the strength of Conan's swing?

Basically want to know if being stronger would be any benefit at all while wielding a lightsaber.

Strength is indeed a benefit as one can land a stronger blow, and use their muscles. However, the blade itself is massless, so it's purely the wielder's physical strength (augmented or otherwise) that lends the strikes strength. So you could power someone to their knees by pressing against their blade with the leverage it offers, but you couldn't just swing it and expect it to beat them back.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Hell Yes. A Lightsaber might not have much momentum, but upper body strengh is still very important. If Pee Wee blocks, Conan can just push Pee Wee's blade back into his head. And a lightsaber must have some momentum, because there is an entire school based around overpowering strikes.

Simply put yes, when locking blades with another lightsaber, a Sith Sword, or when striking Yuuzhan Vong Armor, some forms of Sith Dark Armor, or anything with density and strength like Durasteel (Nevermind Mandalorian Iron), the passive form of Cortosis Weave seen in the blades and armor of both KotOR*, and Vonduun Crab Armor momentum becomes very relavent.

*Star Wars seems to have two kinds of Cortosis Weave; one is where the item when struck by a lightsaber blade causes the lightsaber to deactivate after take damage, the other is the kind seen in KotOR which seems to nullify the lightsabers ability to ignore an items normal structural integrity; I term them Active and Passive Cortosis Weave.

Completely OT: Imperial Star Dreadnaught- a class of it's own! This sloganizer is the best thing ever!

Man the EU sucks.

The movies are full of locked-blade strength contests, so I don't understand how this can really be in doubt.

How, exactly, does the EU ever deny that?

I'd assume you just fail at reading, but you removed the paragraph break everyone can see in my original post. Those statements are separate paragraphs, ie THEY ARE NOT LINKED. The EU sucks because of this cortosis mandalorian iron lameness, and IN OTHER NEWS the movies are full of locked-sabres and thus the OP confuses me.

Don't edit my posts when you quote them to try and start something, fuckhole.

Forget it, Stark irrationally saying the EU sucks without provocation is like him being constantly angry and you being a stick in the mud whenever something of comedic value presents itself.

Sorry, I must have missed the board rule to that effect. They were in the same post divided by NOTHING but a paragraph change, so they were obviously not linked. Gotcha. Valen forbid we assume that in a post where you whine about the EU sucking AND question why lightsabres wouldn't follow CoM you might be talking about the EU not having lightsabres following CoM.
and IN OTHER NEWS the movies are full of locked-sabres and thus the OP confuses me.

I quoted your post IN ITS ENTIRETY, arsehole. I didn't edit a single thing.

Yeah, RIGHT. This:
Stark wrote:Man the EU sucks.

The movies are full of locked-blade strength contests, so I don't understand how this can really be in doubt.
Does not equal this:
Stark in bland world wrote:Man the EU sucks.
The movies are full of locked-blade strength contests, so I don't understand how this can really be in doubt.
Too bad the original is RIGHT THERE were everyone can see it, hey? Otherwise you might be able to MISREPRESENT MY POSTS some more, hey? PS - the first quote above is what's produced by pressing the 'quote' button on my post. If you're going to edit, then lie about it, at least make it fucking BELIEVABLE.

In other news, I'm not going to help you hijack another thread. See? THE POWER OF PARAGRAPHS.

No you're right, my bad. I DID edit your post. I took out a pair of linebreaks to save space. That naturally changed the entire meaning of your post.

Drop it. You read it one way, Stark meant it another by the way he used space to indicate two thoughts. It has virtually no bearing on the topic and it is HIJACKING.

Since the blade doesn't necessarily cut by 'sharpness' like a metal blade (there are eight million theories how lightsabres work, after all) I wonder what limits there are on cutting simply based on user strength. For instance, Qui Gon really jammed his sabre into that door in TPM: a weaker person may not have been able to force it in at all. Similarly, certain armours can stop glancing hits (Vader's armour, various and sundry EU stuff) but direct or strong hits are much better at penetrating.

Another way to look at it: since there is 'resistance' to sabre blades, if you placed it against a dense armour plate and turned it on, it might be pushed away from it by the emerging blade.

Hmm, interesting thought. There was a cut scene in Ep I I believe where Qui Gon was walking in Mos Espa with Darth Mauls probe droid coming up behind him.

Anyway, Qui Gon grabbed his sword, activated it, cut the droid in half and deactivated his sword in one swift motion. The FX of the lightsaber didn't even have the blade fully extended yet and the droid didn't seem to be pushed down, rather than slices-then fall to the ground.

Course, it's been a while since I"ve seen it so my memory may be faulty.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The droid probably wasn't made out of anything sturdy enough to provide resistance (dense materials seem to require a blowtorch-like slowness to cut, unlike thin hollow metal or people) and Qui-gon probably hit it properly. Seeing as you can slap a saber out of someone's hand with a good strike, and that certain materials do indeed provide resistance to the saber blade, I think it makes sense that a proper material and a poorly held saber could result in the saber jumping back at you.

then what would happen if you aim two deactivated lightsabers at each other (projection plate to projection plate) at a distance of a few centimeters and then ignite both at the same time?
