RotJ Question

When Palpatine says: "Ah yes, a jedi's weapon, much like your fathers..."
When he says his fathers, does he mean the lightsaber that Obi-Wan Kenobi gave Luke on Tatooine, or the lightsaber that Darth Vader has?
I was thinking the former, but...?

Could be either one, really. Luke's doesn't look like either one, and Palpatine isn't even looking at the sabre when he gives the line. I think he's just psyching Luke out, and the accuracy of what he says at that point isn't really important...he's just trying to draw parallels between father and son, to drive Luke to the Dark Side.

I think you are right on that. Luke's RotJ saber looks more like Obi-Wan's ANH saber than it does Anakin's or Vader's.

He's not physically comparing lightsabers, he's just stating that they both have lightsabers.

I agree with Robert Treder that this is just psychological warfare. He was reminding Luke that his father was a Jedi once, too. If he fell to the Dark Side, when fully trained and the Chosen One, what chance does Luke stand of resisting?

I think Palpatine is commenting on the fact that Luke and Vader were the only two left in the galaxy using lightsabers* So i'll side with Slartibartfast on this one.

Someone should do a list. It is bloody annoying.

Not a bad idea, of course it means rereading eu books....
If I were to compile such a list would it have to include Young Jedi Knights as well?

Hell just start with the Solo kids, and let the fun begin.

Right on target.

Palpy might not be referring to the handle of the lightsaber, he might be referring to the crystal within the lightsaber.

Doubtful, since he's barely even looking at the saber when he says it.

That is what he meant. By looking at it, you would see the hilt but not the crystal. By not looking at it, you don't see the hilt and still don't see the crystal. So he would have been referring to the crystal because either way he wouldn't see it. Personally, I agree with Robert Treder all the way.

In the ANH novelization it is stated quite clearly by Obi-Wan that lightsabers are still in use in certain parts of the galaxy.
A lightsaber would make a great demolitions tool, function like today's reciprocating saw.
Another possibility would be use with counter-terrorism and HRT teams that need to penetrate a wall without all the noise of conventional explosives.

Could he have been refering to the Lightsaber Anakin used before he fell. Anakin did use a Green saber at one point.

That was just a spare that those Jedi in the arena gave Anakin. Also, at that point, Palpatine hasn't seen the blade ignited, so he probably doesn't know what color it is. And anyways, he isn't likely to be talking about the color, since that's not really important.
