How can the lightsaber blade hold its form? If it's pure energy, it should radiate out into space. If it's plasma contained by a magnetic field, how do you get the magnetic field to take torodial form and to stop at a predetermined distance?

Magic.
Seriously though, how do we know it's any of those things.

I can't think of anything other that can materialize at a predetermined distance and cut through any substance with ease.

There really is no explanation. We don't know of anything that can do it. So it is like magic. Just accept that it works. Finding how is just going to amount to technobabble.

Magic? Does that mean that SW is fantasy instead of SF?

The Force? Sounds a bit like fantasy to me. It's kind of both in my mind. It's science fiction with ships and blasters and stuff. But there are some fantasy elements in it. Like the Jedi and the Force.
Besides, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. To quote that one guy.

The Best explination I've heard is that the Glow you see is acutal because its Raw Plasma(Somehow Generated) and being held in by a very finely tuned shield, Why it blocks Blaster-Bolts and such so well is because of it, and why it can melt through solid doors yet just cautrise wounds(Instead of setting you on fire, heat can't transfer through the blade-shield)

No it's Clarke tech.

Is he ever going to update that page to include EpII or what?

I keep expecting him too. If it never happens though, it is still informative.

Since matter and energy are intertwinably related, perhaps a lightsabre blade is an in-between between matter and energy.

He's "defected" after seeing Ep 2. I'll find the tread where I announced it...

The crappiest one is the one where it says that the crystals themselves contain "pulses"of energy that the user somehow focuses with the force, or some other magic tech bs.. at least that's what I got from the whole "crystal with a metal jacket to form the handle around it and that's it.. no other parts" crap. Then later lightsaber technology changed...
Maybe it was Dark Empire's lengthy "appendix" where I read that. Anybody confirm?

You need to take some physics classes.

There's no such thing as a state between matter and energy. There is matter, and there's energy. End of story.

I think a lightsaber is merely a cylinder-shaped ray shield of some sort (of the sort that incinerates stuff) with some visible particle to make it, well, viisble. That would explain the bouncing against other shields and blasters.

I think the magnetic field containing plasma is the one that strikes my fancy. It would explain the deflection of blaster bolts (magnetic repulsion) and the cauterization of wounds, and the flames caused by blaster bolts. As to how to project a magnetic field in such a way, haven't a clue.

Check out this site:

Its the best site I've ever seen that discusses lightsabres

That is an excellent one!
I wish he'd update for AOTC though (purple lightsabers, lightsabers work in heavy rain & small puddles, etc).

Knife already posted that on the 19th!
Reading Robert Brown's announcement that he became disenchanted with Star Wars was quite crushing to hear. He had one of the best SW tech sites online...

Did you see the bit Mike wrote about him going off his trolley? It's a shame...

No, I don't think I did. Do you have a link?
I've always wondered what Saxton and Mike could do to piss Brown off so much.

Interesting.. I'll second that.
What happened?
