how much damage can these things take? I was having a friendly debate with someone I know, and he's thinking a company of battletech mechs could take it down.

List the capabilities of battletech mechs, please. Or are they from games?

games. rule of thumb is that their top weapon does 20 pts of damage, and a car is 2-4 pts worth. admittedly, they carry more then one weapon, but the firepower isn't that impressive.

Im more curious with how much an at-at can take, so I can provide examples that way.

An AT-AT can take a lot. In ESB, the snowspeeders' bolts did no damage to the AT-ATs' armor. And one leg took a direct hit from a heavy defense turret and turned out fine.

Basically, what does "points" mean in terms of real damage?

Btech mechs have ~5 klick ranges. AT-ATs have 17 klick engagement ranges. Do the math.

A Battletech PPC is roughly 20mW. I doubt it would even warm an AT-AT's hull.

I think AT-ATs are shielded. When that artillery bolt hit the AT-AT in ESB, it didn't explode or anything but looked the same as when the turbolaser bolts were absorbed by the Falcon's shields during the asteroid chase. Hence, I think AT-ATs are shielded, which may be one reason why they're so hard to kill.

Well, the novels describe the lasers as megawatt level (and that's not what I used in my error post, so this post should not be deleted). I can't find any online references to actual combat capability, though I will look to see if I can figure a way...I think I've thought of one, but it may take a while. I need to find the caliber of a gun in BT.

Battletech forces would be wiped out by WW2 military forces. An AT-AT could destroy scores if not hundreds of modern tanks.

A company of Battletech forces would be exterminated in seconds. Hell there longest range weapon only reaches out 20,000 meters.

Battletech Grey Death Legion Saga, "The Price of Glory", paperback version. Grayson Carlisle' Marauder had an autocannon with a bore of 120 mm. Assuming the gun fired 1 shot per second, a 120 mm HE round does 1 point of damage. Wish i could find the books again, as it had lots of information. Actual numbers of rounds, caliber, and firing time all in one location.

price of glory was my fav book in 4th grade. loaned it to a friend, never saw it again. I remember quotes like that.

I dont think a AT-AT can survive a headshot from its own weaponry IIRC in Dark Empire Luke deflects a bolt back at an AT-At and frags it.

so the max firepower excluding the "maximum firepower" shield generator busting shots might be an idea of what an AT-AT can take.
