What Starship would you want to 'really' have?

Sure we from time to time have various threads where we muse about having a Star Dreadnaught, a Death Star an ISD... But what if you got a ship where you had to actually EARN a living with it?

Lets say you get a ship, fully stocked for up to 6 months, but thats it. You have to hire a crew and earn a living to RE-stock the ship within 6 months time...

What would you pick?

Seriously that would rock.

I'd probably use it for a tour business. Get spacesuits for customers, tether them to the patio and cruise near some pretty nebulas or gas giants.

'earn a living'

Eclipse-class. Good for piracy, grav-well projectors and weapons ensure it'll be able to pirate convoys, and will be great against enemy fleets, etc.

Ill take a SunCrusher and have local worlds pay me to NOT blow up their sun.

"Transfer money to this account or I'll blow up your sun. Don't believe me? Look at your neighbors...wait you can't can you their gone HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

It's reallly really expensive to maintain an Eclipse. Raiding convoys won't cut it. Plus, enemy fleets won't help if they're destroyed.

As for me, I'd probably choose the Coral Vanda. Can't beat a flying Casino/cruise ship.

You can take over a system or something like that with an Eclipse, though. Not to mention given how big they are, the Eclipse could simply ionize the fleets, capture then, scrap, etc.

But maybe my idea is a pipe dream///

Where are you going to get the tens of thousands needed to crew it?

Member its only you and the ship at first.

Another idea I have:

Ithorian herd ship - park one in the atmosphere at Coruscant, ensure Ithorian monks are there to maintain a balanced ecosystem in the wilderness area of the ship, and we can run a zoo there. With the profits, we can pay game hunters to bag more wildlife from the galaxy - under advisement of the Ithorians - to increase the number of species attraction there.

I'd get myself a World Devastator.

"Hey, want me to mine that entire planet and use all its material to make ten billion hubcaps?"

"Okay."

"Hey, you didn't pay up! Now I'm gonna have to turn YOUR planet into ten billion hubcaps!"

As everything floats in Star Wars there's going to be a massive galactic surplus of hubcaps about.

I'd choose a Nebulon Ranger for courier work, moving data and small high value parcels across the stars. Also I'd imagine it would be good for smuggling spice and the like as its sufficiently heavily armed and fast to avoid patrol craft.

The Wild Karrde (or somesuch): fast, small, inconspicious, properly defended and comes with all the tricks and tools required to run a galaxy-spanning smuggling conglomerate. With a bit of luck I'll be the best-paid smuggler/information merchant in the galaxy with that baby.

A YT-2400. Flyable with one person, solid firepower and shielding for its size, fast, long ranged, decent cargo capacity...

The Ebon Hawk!

Passengers, convoy escort, cargo transportation, search and rescue.

You name it!

Some sort of tramp freighter. YT 2000 for me. Don't even have to be a SW smuggler, just run cargo.

A Corellian Corvette. They aren't obscenely massive to the point where I can't make a profit with them soon enough. Bail Organa may be a rich Senator, but I doubt even he could afford to operate a Corvette on his own if it cost THAT much to maintain.

They have a pretty good amount of firepower, more than enough to pick on random trade convoys. And their speed should allow me to escape most enemies. (Of course if a Star Destroyer picks me up, i'm toast. But that's the case for most of us.)

I always like the Pulsar Skate. Almost as fast as the Falcon and nowhere near as fugly.

To expand on that, I'd take the Night Caller from the Allston-penned X-Wing novels. I know that they had the skills, but I'm sure I could get some good pirating done in that thing. Anyone could.

some small warship would indeed be neat, but I doubt you can find a loyal crew for such a ship, like lets say a corvette...

maybe an A-Wing, modified for even more speed, and offer an extremely fast courier service...

Depends. I'd like to sell myself out as a mercenary in an X-Wing, but most likely I'd make a living running cargo in an old Correllian freighter.

I'd also like to plug a game I've been playing. Vega Strike. Same premise as the OP.

I'd try to go it as a courier/bush pilot. The overhead there is small enough to be manageable by a small group. Generic Corellian light freighters are well-suited for that role, but personally I just love the Imperial Lambda class shuttle.

I liked Vilmarh Grahk's Inferno, if only for the droid interface. Of course i'd much prefer something like the Errant Venture, despite the fact it's a Hackpole creation.

If privateers in the 1600s could operate with crews of hundreds of men, I think we can get away with an equally sized crew for an equivalent space vessel. Costs seem to be the biggest problem.

$0.02

A TradeFed Droid Control Ship. Cargo Capacity, for shipping. Decent Armment. Idiot droid crew, but tech can be upgraded.

Crew yeah, but suppose that fucker breaks down somewhere in the system of nowheresville? How are you going pay for repairs? Not to mention long term costs like fuel and ammo? I don't even want to imagine hangar and parking fees. Sorry, but I don't think raiding random convoys could support this thing.

You could threaten planetary bombardments of developed worlds and hold them hostage, but that's also a great way to get the Empire on your ass. The more people you threaten and steal from, the more people in the galaxy will want your ass on a platter.

Bear in mind your droid crew may not need food or paychecks, but it still needs maintenance, replacement parts, batteries/fuel sources.
