Darth Bane: Path of Destruction: Minimalism?

I was reading Darth Bane: Path of Destruction today, specifically the part where Jedi Lord Farfalla arrived on Ruusan with 300 Jedi. In a battle involving the entire Sith Brotherhood of Darkness and the Army of Light, should 300 additional Jedi really make as much of a difference as the book implies they will? Or is it simply more minimalism?
Also, I did a search in PSW for a topic like this and couldn't find anything relating to this specific topic.

I believe the Battle of Ruusan was the culmination of the New Sith Wars, which lasted roughly 1000 years. I think, by this time, the Sith, Jedi and Republic were reduced to very few numbers.

300 Jedi plus their fleet in a battle of JEdi and Sith was a big deal. The real complaint even fans of the book such as myself has is the way combat is depicted. It takes a stunning revelation by Darth Bane to simply destroy the forest that Hoth's forces are hiding in, when the Sith could have simply bombarded the planet as they had control over access to the world before Bane told them to engage the Republic Fleet. At first I tried to defend it, but I confess it has made the book weaker to me, although I think it is still a very good read.

I haven't read the book, but by shear numbers; there were only supposed to be 10 thousand or so Jedi prior to the Clone Wars spread out amongst the galaxy. So even considering parity way back in the day, having three hundred extra Jedi on top of what ever force is already in place would seem to be quite a comitment for the Jedi.
How many Jedi were already in the fray?

The Battle of Ruusan is approximately 1000 years after the the destruction of the Star Forge if I am not wrong.
I could imagine it being a big deal because the Jedi were utterly decimated 1000 years earlier, and I think even a hard and fast recruiting would be insufficient to raise numbers to 10000 in just 1000 years what with most of galactic infrastructure totally destroyed and only a few Jedi (possibly only the companions of the Exile and an assortment of others) to train any.

Battle of Ruusan is 3000 years after the Jedi Civil War (or 1000 years before the Movies)
