The Alliance's X-wings and Y-wings are switched with A-wings and B-wings, respectively.
What difference does this make?

The A-Wings are faster than TIE Fighters IIRC and so the trench run may not be as difficult as with XWings who had to worry about the TIEs basically running them down. The A wings would outrun the TIEs and basiclaly cut the time they were in the trenches shorter than the X-wings, exposing them to less danger. The bad part is that A-wings are constructed out of SW equivalnet of tissue paper and would not stand any kind of pounding that the X-Wings routinely withstood. You thought GCS warpcores were bad....
The B-Wings would not have been as effective as Y wings. They carry a greater payload and have more firepower but are slower and less manuevrable. Most likely they would not have survived the trench run and the surface tuirbolasers would have had an easier time picking them off.

The Empire wins. A-Wings doesn't carry proton torpedoes, and B-Wings are TL fodder.

How about substituting TIE Defenders and Scimitar Assault Bombers then?

TIE Defenders are 50% faster than an X-Wing, equally shielded, and carry more weapons. They would also be considerably faster than the TIE Interceptors or even Darth Vader's TIE, as well as more manueverable, for all the good that would do in a trench run.
If the Rebels had been flying TIE Defenders they probably would have had far fewer casualties.

Why do you think the B-wing is slower than the Y-wing?
It's slightly faster and can handle/deal out a lot of damage. The only problem I see that even 2 B-wings can't fly beside each other in the trench so a 3 elements flight group can form only a line and follow each other.
A-wings would perform better against fighters but their cannons probably won't do sufficient damage against fixed TL batteries.
On the other hand they would give even harder time for the crew of the batteries to track them than the X-wings.

A-wings carry concussion missiles.
And B-wings are only a notch slower than Y-wings. That doesn't necessarily make them cannon fodder.

Well...all I can go by is the appearance of the TIE Defender in the TIE Fighter game, but going by that, it's TALLER than an X-Wing but no wider, from what I saw, and possibly even has a narrower profile.

i think the question we should be asking is how would the rebels have performed with the addition of A-wings and B-wings..... With A-wings providing fighter as cover as the B-Wings made attack runs against turbolaser batteries AND the X and Y wings making their runs in the trenches IMHO the operation would have went far better with fewer losses on the rebel side.
