Force Heretic: Remnant Discussion Thread (spoliers maybe)

Post by Illuminatus Primus »

Due to be out in a month by the first non-American authors for the EU...we have this quote from Insider:
Remnant begins with the newly minted Galactic Alliance pressing its advantage against the Yuuzhan Vong, and it ends with a quest by Luke Skywalker into the Unknown Regions in search of a legendary planet that could hold the key to the war. Along the way, Jacen Solo tries his had at diplomacy in the Imperial Remnat, Han Solo returns to the Koornacht Cluster, and the Yuuzhan Vong renegade Nom Anor fights for his life beneath a transformed Coruscant.

Williams is particulary proud of their work developing the characters of Tahiri Veila, the Tusken Raider-raised Jedi still reeling from her captivity by the Yuuzhan Vong, and the Barabel Jedi Saba Sebatyne, one of Remnant's most compelling figures. The same goes for Nom Anor, whose double-dealings in the underworld of Yuuzhan Vong apostates are a subplot of the Force Heretic trilogy.

"All three are going through intense personal journeys, and it was a delight---grim, sometimes--to prod them along their way," Williams said.

I look forward to it. I thought that all of the characters introduced in Destiny's Way were excellent, and I had always hoped to see more of them.

I wonder what they're going to do with Anakin's prophecy, though, now that he is dead.

Nothing token though, hopefully someone who has acces to true sith techniques.

No, no. Give him something real. The EU has plenty of shit that is just a straight out copy of the OT. Let there be a Dark Jedi that aids the Empire. That way, there can be real animosity between the Jedi and the Empire. Instead of just, he's a Sith, and we're supposed to oppose them. I'm a Sith and I'm supposed to fight the Jedi. Give em some hell to go by. Heh. Hopefully this new book will be good. I think it comes out sooner than you think, like Feb 1. I could be wrong, but hopefully not, I haven't had anything to read in a while.

The New Republic has clearly fallen and been superceeded by the Galactic Alliance.

It's possible that the Imperial Remnant will eventually be incorperated into that government, and bring some discipline and practicality to the GA bueracracy.

I think it would be far more interesting, and ironic, and powerful, if a light Jedi (ignoring the whole thing about "there is no light or dark") or several light-siders, wind up giving the Remnant a whole lot of power.

The NR where always pussys, The galaxy needs some Imperial Iron in their back bones to keep control of the whole place. Look at what happened when the NR took their eyes of the game. 70 possible civil wars, umpteen threats from outside (each of which the NR wanted to ignore till Organa-Solo made it her business), and then a YV invasion.

The vibe I got was that the new government would be even more decentralized than before, with smaller sectors taking responsibility for their own defense.

What vibe? They said virtually nothing about it before, and Omas actually took charge of the NR and reined in rogue Senators. There's nothing to back up that assumption.

"The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances" was one of the names suggested by Cal Omas for the new government. Not a very centralist sounding name. Nor is "Galactic Alliance," for that matter.

It works.

I wouldn't worry too much because of the name. EU authors have come up with some truly bizarre shit when you consider what it should be/what it is called.

On the contrary, I think the names are at least partially indicative of the kind of government Omas has in mind.

lol. I just think it is a tad premature to think about that now.

On the other hand, he may have just been voted into power by some confederation-minded Senators, so he is kissing ass and giving it stupid names. We don't know yet. The fact that they're diplomatically courting the Empire even though they don't need them to win anymore is particularly interesting.

Agreed. An earlier synopsis of Remnant stated that the last of the Empire would be "brought into the light," perhaps a not so subtle hint that the Remnant is going to be a part of the new government.

No! The last part of the Empire can be conquered (or as they will call it "incorporated") by the Rebel traitors!

If Remnant does not involve fleets of ISDs cruising out into NR/GA space, kicking ass and reclaiming territory, I will be very cross.

The Empire is dead.

The Remnant is to the Empire what Charlemagne's Empire was to Rome.

The Galactic Empire died with a fat and traitorous moron on an Imperial enclave to a vengeful Royal Guard: Xandel Carivus.

The Remnant is related to the Empire in ideology only. And their ideology is closer to that of Thrawn, and still watered-down beyond that.

I want it to join in a government with the NR, so they can counter some of the brain-bugs the NR engages it.

And for all one might find the NR irritating, the NR is winning, and they did defeat the Empire.

And the NR still vastly outnumbers the Empire, sorry. I want them to join for their ideological value, which is about all their worth. They have 8 sectors vs. the NR's probably around 700.

The Empire died with Thrawn, Palpatine had the Empire set up in such a way so that only very remarkable leaders could control it and wield its power. Unfortunately Thrawn died as the last of the Grand Admirals and the heiarchy was much like a ladder without rungs.

The Imperial Remnant becoming part of the Galactic Alliance is interesting, that does add at least one more Super Star Destroyer to the fleet to go along with Guardian.

Uhm...bullshit? Palpatine himself returned after Thrawn's death. It wasn't until the coup that precipitated his final death was completely destroyed did the Imperial central government totally disintegrate.

You're right but he wasn't back in power for long...still though the point stands that without the Emperor even a skilled tactician and great genius like Thrawn couldn't keep everything together long. Thrawn needed the Force coordination of C'baoth and he opened himself up to Rukh's attack. Definitely things the Emperor wouldn't need to do.

Well you said the Empire died with Thrawn. Palpatine was defeated only due to his obsession with the Skywalkers and the genetic sabotage done to all of his genetic source material and clones. Other than that, he was winning.

Not so much his obession with the Skywalkers (justified) as his overestimation of Vader's loyalty, IMO.
