Is this where they got the idea for the Jedi fighter? The Horten Ho VIII supersonic fighter. It really resembles some of the idea generation drawings of the Jedi fighter.

I wouldn't be surprised. Afterall, Amidala's ship in TPM looks just like the SR-71 and her ship in the beginning of AOTC looks a lot like a B-2.

The Jedi Starfighter is derived from the A-wing from the Old Trilogy, methinks. Or rather, the A-wing is derived from the Jedi Starfighter.

I'd say it more closely resembled the Northrop YB-35 flying wing.

Ah, close enough. Both real life planes look a lot like the ship in that they all seem to lack a traditional fuselage. Although the AOTC ship did have the four engines like the flying wing does.

Whether you like Bob Brown or not, this is a good page about the design of the Jedi Starfighter. Keep in mind that it was written before EII was released, and has not been updated since.

Nah, the Jedi fighter is a fighter sized Star Destroyer, i think that was the intent to begin with.

And our dream of 1 TIE fighter taking on a fleet of Federation ships comes one step closer to reality

Slave I could do it, thats pretty damn amazin itself. Also would negate any maneuverability advantages Fed ships would have.

Lucas gets all sorts of crazy ideas to base his ships on. Slave-1 was apparently based on a street lamp. :)

The Falcon is a hamburger, with an olive on a toothpick.

Maybe the Jedi Starfighter is a tribute to the original Star Destroyer. In the original draft SD's where suposed to be 2-man fighters.

I always thought the base of it was an elephant's head?! :?

Agreed. I had always heard it was an elephant's head...just as the AT-AT's movement was based on an elephant walking.

I read Slave 1 being a street lamp as well. It was the artist who said it, it was based on the streetlamps outside. Don't remember where I read it though.

Actually, I think they used the delta shape because:

1) It's supposed to be made by KDY, whose starships usually are dagger-shaped.
2) It's one of the few possible shapes suited for atmospheric flight at hypersonic speed. A craft flying at 5000 km/h in atmosphere would have to cope with immense drag and other aerodynamic problems. However, a triangular delta shape doesn't suffer as much from this as many other shapes.

That picture DOES have a stricking resemblance though. I wonder if it's mere coincidence or not...

Look at the Slave-1 when it's landed. Definately looks like part of a street lamp.

An Imperial Star Destroyer looks sort of like a super tanker at a distance.

I read in Star Wars Insider that they based the delta wing off of the B-2 and the engines off of the B-52. A deadly combination I wouldn't mind seeing in RL. :D

WTF? So you want to ruined the B-2's stealth, while giving it a considerably inferior power plant compared to what's already installed and increasing drag?

The advantages of this are what?
