sith question

In TPM Yoda says that there are always two sith nore, no less. So my question is what is the official status on numbers of the sith? Because the Emperor had Mara Jade as his Hand, while having vader as his apprentice as well. not to mention that C'boath guy in Zahn's novels. Did Yoda mean that Sith run in pairs? Is there a difference between Dark Jedi and Sith?

The Sith was a totally different order. Dark Jedi are simply normal Jedi that use their powers for their own ends. THe difference between a Sith and a Jedi is like the difference between a Priest of the RC Church and a Priest of the Church of Satan. They seem very similar to a distant observer but they follow very different philosophies. Dark Jedi are what fills the gap in between. The is also the category of the Uber Jedi, like Kyle Katarn which fits somewhere between Dark Jedi and Jedi.

This thread has occured before, Dark Jedi are simply Jedi who have turned to the Dark Side. Sith have actually gone trhough Sith training and practice Sith methods.

Sith are one of two things.
A very old , nearly unknown race perverted by Dark Jedi a very long time ago in the Old Republic.
An Order of Force weilders that sprang from said banished Jedis.
Dark Jedi are just that Jedi who use the Dark side of the Force.

Since no one really answered to your question, I try...
The Sith was an ancient race, they had sense for the dark side of the force.
They used the dark side, combined with strange alchemy.
Their race was found by the jedis.
Later some renegade jedis took control over them. That lead to the Great Hyperspace war.
These jedis became the Lord of the Sith.
In that time a lot of sith existed. Later they fought for power and almost killed each other.
From that time only one master and an apprentice existed. That was the story under Palpy's rule as well.
He also had one sith apprentice at a time.
First Maul, then Tyranus, finally Vader.
Please notice that in RotJ, Palpy says something like this to Luke:
"...join me and take your father's place..." bla, bla, bla
BTW, Mara Jade wasn't a sith!

Yeah, the whole "Evil turns on Evil" philosophy that Darth Bane came up with after the "Thought Bomb" pretty much wiped out all the Sith but himself.
