Favorite pre-NJO Novel/Series?

Post by RogueIce »

Basically, if it happened before NJO, which is your favorite SW Novel or "Series" of novels (ie: X-wing, Black FLeet Crisis, etc.)?

My pick is the entire X-Wing novel run, with I, Jedi thrown in too. Out of X-Wing, the Stackpole ones are enjoyable for lots of action, and Allston because he's pretty damn funny.

What're your thoughts? Oh, and I'll include the "Classic" ones from the days of old, and the Young/Junior Jedi Knights Series.

PS: I don't remember if there was a similar thread to this, or if it was a thread for the worst, or something like this that ended up in people talking about their favorite novel, so if I'm repeating, sorry in advance.

Thrawn. After that, maybe Courtship. Of the kiddie books, it has to be the YJK over everything before or since.

Thrawn Trilogy, but other than that I'll say the Wraith Squadron books. The characters were more interesting the missions were actually fun to follow and there was NO CORRAN HORN! A stupid fucking character to say the least.

Corran is an asshole, plain and simple. Its a personal opinion but "I, jedi" truly sucked and Corran Horn single handedly managed to ruin "Bacta War" for me. Like I saidm all personal opinion.

As a SW fan the Thrawn trilogy will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the 1st EU book i read. But for pure comedy read the Wraith Squadron books. Between Ton, Face, and Janson there are plenty of laughs and action.

Anything written by Kevin Anderson is guaranteed to suck. My favorite is the Black Fleet Crisis

BFC was good when it focused on the military bit. Very interesting there. But the fact that the Yevetha are transparently based off Radical Islamics has and always will bother me. Allston's works are pure genius, with Starfighters of Adumar being onje of my faves. He combines humor and the stroyline exceptionally well. And Wes Janson is easily number 3 of the best EU characters, sitting right there behind Thrawn and Mara.

And of course Zahn is a fucking God of the EU. The guy is arrogant about it, but he has good reason to be so. He basically started the EU, and if he hadn't done so well it probably would have ended with him. So the Heir to the Empire Trilogy wins out as best EU for me.

Thrawn and the X-Wing books were good. Has anybody read Splinter of the Mind's Eye? It was the original EU I think. It was written before we find out about Luke and Leia so there are some...interesting scenes.

The Thrawn Trilogy was top-notch.

I never saw that connection, and I read the trilogy twice. I'm not sure if that was the intention, but that's just my opinion.

I hated Lando's sub-plot in that so much I cannot in good conscience recommend that trilogy.

X-Wing books with the nive lice action are my favorites.

Thrawn I am not really into.

Maybe it's cause I want to be a pilot and not a strategist heh.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Zahn attempted to one-up continuity personally, the excellent Dark Empire was shoe-horned by him into an odd chronological slot, he refused to work w/ previous Marvel and Dark Horse material and w/ his second books ruined the Thrawn character w/ the absurd "wait no he's an anti-hero" crap. He can be a prick.

Marvel and Splinter of the Mind's Eye started the EU.

Marvel and WEG had a fanbase before Zahn ever materialized.

Yup, I remember that one.

The Wraith Squardon Books had it all. Big Fleet actions in the form of Solo's Anti-Zsinji fleet, good comedy in the form of Janson wearing a Ewok as a bathing suit, and lots of sneaky shit in the form of all the Wraiths.
