Hyperspatial Disturbance

In NJO, "Dark Tide I: Onslaught" I think, it was mentioned that there is a Hyperspace disturbance that apparently is supposed to prevent travel outside the SW galaxy. Is there anything other than that book which actually supports this, or is it just SW writers ripping off Trek ideas again?
If this barrier has existed for a while, why the hell was Outbound Flight launched?
Is the whole Disturbance thing just propaganda created by Palpatine to discourage people leaving and bringing trouble back with them?

Saxton has an interesting theory that this is a myth.
Besides, the Outbound Flight, Thrawn's missions in the galactic halo beyond the edge of the galactic disk (the Unknown Regions), and the Yuuzhan Vong's ability to invade prove it must be a myth.
Check Saxton's novel quotes with regard to Vector Prime to see what I speak of.

As I recall, it was debunked by Danni Quee (or at least she presented arguments against the theory in some of the early NJO novels) so I doubt it actually exists. Given that YV appear to use the same sort of hyperspace that SW vessels use, I doubt there is one (else the Vong would not be getting into the SW galaxy to begin with.)

Exactly.
However, not don't qoute me here I'm going off by memory but this is how my SW role playing group ran things for the Hapans... but I think they are surrounded by gas clouds of some sort that disrupt hyperspace travel. Don't qoute me though, I'm not entirely sure. Hrm, I'll think I'll go look that up *and pulls out the Courtship of Princess Leia novel*

The only thing preventing SW ships from going extra galactic would be the great distance between galaxies and the fact that the navigational computers on a standard ship would be completely useless since they would have no data on whatever new galaxy they were exploring.
The Vong, who are supposedly extragalactic utilized worldships, gigantic ships that possibly carry all of their civilization with them. We will have more answers regarding that by the time Final Prophecy rolls out in November.

I seem to recall that WEG was the one which introduced the disturbance in early editions of the RPG.

Dark Tide I: Onslaught wrote:A human senator Leia failed to recognise rose to speak. "Forgive me, but it is a well-known and long-established fact that a hyperspace disturbance on the edge of the galaxy makes travel into or out of the galaxy impossible. This supposed invasion could not have taken place."
Leia shook her head. "If that barrier does exist, they found a way around it. They were here, and there is ample evidence of their invasion in the Outer Rim."
Saxton's Commentary wrote:Colourful folklore about a barrier surrounding the galaxy. (Since hyperspace is not really a medium -- it is merely a supralight way of experiencing the usual universe -- it isn't obvious how it could be "disturbed.") This myth was probably invented by some inhabitants of the galaxy as a rationalisation for their societal reluctance to enquire beyond the galaxy's bounds. Those eccentric, enquiring minds who did study the possiblities of other galaxies (eg. Danni Quee and the ExGal Society) did not believe that there was a fundamental obstacle to intergalactic travel.
In medieval times on Earth, the Europeans invented tales of dangerous barriers at the ends of the world. They were technically capable of cross-oceanic sailing but they lacked the incentive of a known destination, and civilisation at home was comfortingly self-sufficient and self-enclosed. The same is almost certainly true of the STAR WARS civilisation.

i think it was just a way to explain or bring the first debates of the Yuzzhon Vong into the novels. Stackpole probally just was told to make it up. The barrier needs to go into more depth than it already is. Theres an upcoming novel by Zahn i think that is about the Outbound flight project so i guess we'll find out then.
in Star Wars terms i think it is just a great fear that most citizens of the Star wars galaxy have about the unknowns especially in deep space. I mean the citizens are even deathly afraid to cross the barrier between the known and unknown parts of the galaxy.

And where did this information come from?
Spaceflight had been used by humans and the main population of the galaxy since long before the formation of the Republic. Most people would have no fears of spacelfight, except a few people with phobias.
