Un charted space.

I have heard references to un charted space when it comes to SW.

Is there really uncharted territory in the Star wars galaxy.

How big is it.

And why is it still uncharted.

And what is the hazard to navigation caused by the uncharted territory.

DISCLAIMER: PURELY SPECULATION

Um from what I can gather from pretty much all sources, the most of uncharted space is on the spiral arms of the galaxy. it's not too big compared to the 'main' part of the galaxy IIRC.

However, we have lots of evidence from canon that during the fall of the OR into the Empire, a lot of races subotaged information in order to hide their existance. GL said that the Empire represents a sort of 'Dark Ages' where a lot of information is lost between it and the OR.

I hope this helps.

So they may not be totally uncharted, however the information could have been corrupted to protect the species that live in that area from Imperial aggression?

Would make sense.

I heard that the emperor orders a few expeditions mounted into those areas, is that true?

One more.... is it possible that one of the spiral arms could not have been explored by either the empire or the Old republic?

Well that's one of the theories Luke and Leia were tossing around when they were trying to figure out who exactly the Noghri were in HTTE. Also I think, and I might be wrong, that the Mon Cals and the Wookies did the same thing. I think. :?
DodoBrd16 wrote:I heard that the emperor orders a few expeditions mounted into those areas, is that true?
Not too sure. We do know that he definetly let Thrawn 'tame' it for him.

I think so, as long as you take it like they sent out a preliminary probe to the sector, and they did mark on the report Further investigation needed and it was never done. Although that one seems to be very popular with both EU writters and fanfic writers alike. :D

That will work right nice.

In case you havent noticed yet, this is all research for the fan fic. And I like that idea, though for this one they would have eventually gotten on with exploring it.

Whats an EU? European Union Lol...dont think thats it, but it was the best guess I could give :)

EU = Extended Universe. I think. Well that's what I was using it for anyway. I mentioned in another thread that you must make sure to post it in the Fanfic forum here so that I can read it! :D

AH!

:D That makes alot more sense lol.

And will do, when I get it done I'll post it here.

Hopefully, I'll have it done within two weeks at the max, however now that college is starting up I'm having to divide my time up between it and work. So it may take longer...but hopefully..around two weeks.

I have however, already gotten a small part done, if you'd like I can post it up here for you to read and see what you think so far?

Sure! In the fanfic area?

Well, it's pretty clear from AOTC, that they had the Galaxy fairly well mapped. Notice though that Obi-Wan went to the Jedi Archives to search for the planet, and not the local library. This may indicate, that during Palpatines rise and the Jedi Purge, that the information was destroyed, either accidentally, or to keep it from getting into ol' Palpy's greedy little claws. (Dooku might have been able to erase one system from the database undetected, but I highly doubt that he'd be able to copy the archival record without raising suspicion.

Of course, that's just my two Dataries...

Yup in the fan fic area...gimmie a sec to post it.

Its just small clip, so no real extended reading.

The Unknown Regions

by Lord of the Farce
I once did some rough surface area calculations on the Star Wars galaxy map in New Jedi Order books using averaged measurements, and I found that the Unknown Regions's surface area takes up less than 15% of the SW galaxy's total surface area.

Of course, if one was to use the same rough measurements for the volume, that 15% becomes a lot less.

Apparentily there are area of the galaxy that would be later label Unknown, While these area were mapped ( maybe via tradional optical and radio telescopes ), there was little known of the races or species that inhabited this area of space .. In the Serie " Hand of Thrawn" it is stated that the Chiss were one of the races that live in such an area... And that the same mission of jedi that were to travel to another galaxy were to explore this region first...

And you know what happen next, the Future emperor arrange a little trap and Thrawn was recuited..

Later Thrawn was sent to secure this region for Empire ( due to the fact that there were races and powers that inhabit the region that could challenge the empire) and Thrawn created the Phalanx that was suppose to be defend the empire from thiis threat but later was taken over by the Chiss as a form of foreign legion...

There also are regions in the arms that are unknown cause they too are inhabited by hostile races...

Like the Ssi-ruuk before they joined the OR.

There are 3 main areas in the wars galaxy.

There is the republic/empire/known space where all the major event s occurs. Everything is well mapped out, governed, and traveled. It's at least 75% of the galaxy

Then there is Wild Space, a small area between the edge of the galaxy and the edge of the Outer Rim. This place is mapped and traveled, but it is not governed. There are alot of pirates, warlords, hostile races, and whatnot out there. Plus, it's so far out there, there is no real motivation to go out and poke around.

Finally yu have the unknown regions. It has been mapped, via probes, telescopes and a few daring individuals. It was even colonized back before the republic. But no one really goes there anymore for a few reasons. First off, the maps are out dated. You have to keep them continually updated with changes so you don't fly into anything. In the wane of the Old Republic and the Imperial Age, they didn't put a whole lot of effort into updating the maps. Second, is the sheer hostility out there. The UR is made up of a huge collection of mini empires, republics, states, and whatnot. In a sense, it is not civilized out there (that sense being Rome vs the Barbarians, but still). These places mount fleets and are apparently always going at it to the point where they are strong enough to give the known galaxy severe problems. Hence why Thrawn conquered, wiped out, and allied with races out there, to form a breakwall around the Empire (and his own people) from the really nasty denzians like the Ssi-ruuk and crew.

UnCharted space could also be the Unknown Regions. I find it hard to belive the Empire or Old Republic didnt want to map and navigate this region. The Empire was also aware of the Chiss and that there from the Unknown Regions and they still didnt want to explore it, i find that hard to believe.

It could have been a case of they sent a few scouts in and they never returned and give the beuracracy they may have planned on more missions but they never got to them

How bad ass are the Chiss

In the Hand of Thrawn a squadron of Victory star destroyer were dispatch to Chiss space to Ambush the Jedi exploration mission.. Apparentily they met the equalivent to a small defense fleet of the Chiss ( mostily Gunboat and Corvess type craft) and was destroyed with the exception of one VSD....
The one who captain would recruit Thrawn into the Empire... good reason not to attempt a major effort to known the region better.. At least to the empire secured the rest of the Galaxy...

Entering the Unknown region until the rebels were destroy would have been like Hilter invading USSR before defeating England...Not a wise move..

Keep in mind the Chiss are still there under Thrawns orders to build up a nice sized Army and Navy and everyone kinda forgot about em :D

Let's do the math, shall we? (yes, I know, I always ask this question, but goddammit, math works).

Let's say they've been exploring space for 100,000 years. Let's say they can map out a thousand star systems per day, every day (and by "map out", I mean "survey", not just "get a long-range scan of where it is", which can be done with ordinary telescopes).

That's 1,000 x 365 x 100,000, which equals 36.5 billion star systems. However, there are 400 billion star systems in the SW galaxy.

In other words, even if they've been continuously charting space for 100,000 years, at a rate of one thousand star systems per day, they would have mapped less than 10% of their galaxy. So why is it surprising that there would be so-called "Unknown Regions", where they know the rough location of star systems but little else?

If there was some huge government push to chart the entire galaxy, they could probably get it done pretty quickly with their vast resources. However, I don't see why they would make it a priority. Our government isn't even interested in spending the money to track NEO's in our region of space, even though the next one might kill us all.

And yet, as you say on your AOTC page, we learned in the movies everything has been mapped.
First, we discovered that according to the librarian Jocasta Nu, they've mapped every star in the entire galaxy, so that any galactic star system missing from the Jedi Archives must not exist. This is hardly a surprise, given the age of galactic civilization and the speed of hyperdrive

That's why I make a distinction between merely knowing where the stars are and having thoroughly surveyed them, otherwise the canon movie directly contradicts the existence of "Unknown Regions".
