Shielding Question

I've always wondered what it takes to actually penatrate shields/how they work. Is there some kind of 'overall shield rating' that drops as it gets hit, so that when that hits 0%, the whole shield goes out like in the games? (I know they aren't canon). Is it similar to the above idea, except with 'sections' that can fail independently of each other?

The biggest question, though, is what it takes to penetrate the shields, and also what makes them collapse. Does every hit take a bit of shield 'health' away? Or does gradually chipping away not work, and instead you need a sudden splurge of fire to make them fail?

And what about shield repair? How does that factor into the equation, and how does it work?

And help would be greatly appreciated ;)

Shields in SW have a threshold in watts. Below that, nothing affects them and the shields disperse the energy out into space without damage to either those or the ship itself, other than minor wear and tear of the system requiring eventual maintenance. Above that threshold, the shields sustain damage and the ship's shield effectiveness decreases, lowering the amount of power that the shields can move away from the ship. This, of course, makes it easier to exceed the threshold on the next volley/shot, and makes the shields deplete at an even quicker rate until they are finally completely gone.

Here's a recent thread dealing with shield operation: http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?p=305340

Some details are fuzzy because we haven't gotten a lot of information in those areas, but the general idea is that they act like Ossus or I described (even though our descriptions differ in some aspets). We should also keep in mind that different equipment manufactures could design shields that operate slightly differently from other companies, which helps make things even more confusing.

Thanks
