Untitled Animated Star Wars Project Will Explore the Universe from a New Perspective, Blending Wry Comedy and Irreverent Fun

Lucasfilm Animation is currently developing an all-new animated Star Wars series, focusing its efforts on the comedic aspects of the "galaxy far, far away." Featuring creative involvement from Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of the Emmy and Annie Award-winning Robot Chicken, as well as writing from The Daily Show's Brendan Hay, the series will look at the Saga's characters with a playful and irreverent tone. The series will be produced by Daytime Emmy and Gemini Award-winner Jennifer Hill (The Backyardigans), and directed by Emmy-nominated Todd Grimes (Back at the Barnyard).
"There are so many stories taking place in the Star Wars universe, and they don't all have to focus on the fate of the galaxy," said Grimes. "We're looking at Star Wars from a new perspective; this will be a glimpse at how the rest of the galaxy is affected by the events of the Saga. There's a lot of humor to be mined from that."
"The Star Wars universe is so dense and rich; it's crazy to think that there aren't normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined," said Green. "And it's even crazier to think of what those problems might be, since it's all set in a galaxy far, far away. What do these characters do when they're not overthrowing Empires?"
Said Senreich, "We're going to pull back the curtain of some of those behind-the-scenes shenanigans. It's going to appeal to all ages, the way Star Wars should -- but there'll be plenty buried under the surface, as well. As Obi-Wan might say, 'it all depends on your point of view'."

This had better be in the line of Tag and Bink.

It is probably true. I did see an article on Yahoo about it. I think a Star Trek comedy series would work better. Some of the stuff in Voyager and Enterprise would have made more sense then.

I for one am very happy to hear the news. This could be the best thing that has ever happened to the series since the original Star Wars in 1977.

The Star Wars Holiday Special toyed with comedy the following year, but it was far ahead of its time. The world was not yet ready for a comedy series set in a galaxy far far away. Lack of audience sophistication, combined with the acting limitations of the cast prevented it from realizing what the creator had envisioned.

In keeping with George's original vision, which was inherently comical, playing into the threads of the human consciousness (since the first human dropped a rock on the head of his playmate, causing him to blood profusesly, but eliciting laughter), the public is finally ready for an animated sitcom starring science fantasy characters that will let us look at ourselves and ask "are we really special? Like 'special' special"? The answer of course is a resounding "yes."

At the cutting edge of culture, choosing the genius of Seth Green would be a milestone in Lucas' already flawless career.

The new series will be T-canon, judging by past precedent, or perhaps a new category can be created "C-canon" (comedy canon). A series of comics, video games, and manuals based on this new series would be great.

Move over "the Simpsons," get out of the way of progress "Southpark," go to the old folks' home "Family Guy," here comes "Yet to be Named Star Wars Animated Sitcom."

The 21st century generation has suffered enough under the weight of "nerd rage" and "Star Wars fans." The time has come to put these self-important jerks in their place. We need fresh humor based on picking apart the absurdity of these sci fi franchises and characters. Who better to blaze a trail through this new frontier than George Lucas and Seth Green. I just hope they don't bother to include that hack Kevin Smith.

I just don't think a comedy series based on Star Trek would work. We already saw the disasterous results when it was transposed with the cast of "Frasier." No, the essense of Star Wars has always been comedy, from C3PO to Wicket W. Warwick to Ric Olié to Jar Jar Binks, this will finally be the opportunity to set the standard for all comedy stories to come, and revive the flagging sitcom genre, which hasn't seen a ground-breaking, quality show since 'Friends.'

I find it most amusing that Seth Green is the one talking about this as being an actual in-universe thing (i.e. not non-canon parody). Based on some of his other roles, I bet there might be some sarcastic side-character (or in this case main character) played by him. I liked him as Joker in Mass Effect 2, already a SW-like setting. Hope he does something similar with this and not just a Robot Chicken Perpetual SW Edition.

I genuinely wonder what canon rating it'd have. As I've said, I'd expect this to be on the likes of Tag and Bink, or one of those more light-hearted Tales comics.
