During a panel at the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, stated that the company has been working on a Star Wars Blu-ray set. "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material", said Sansweet.

Sansweet didn't give a date, but he said " it won't be in the too distant future."

The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, says that Lucasfilm "tentatively plans the official Blu-ray release to happen in October 2011." Obviously, with the Alien Anthology coming later this year, a 2010 release of Star Wars can be safely ruled out, and considering that A New Hope opened theatrically in May 1977, late 2011 would be a natural choice for a 35th Anniversary Edition Anthology.

If they release the original version on Blu-ray, then I'll be really happy. Still, this is better than nothing, I guess.

Perhaps they'll Blu-ray both the SEs and originals. Wring more cash that way.

I'll buy it if it's the non-special editions, otherwise I'll hold off until they release those at a later point.

I wouldn't hold my breath for non-special editions. Look at how long it took to get the theatrical cuts on DVD, and they were just low quality laserdisc rips. They've even asserted that the theatrical cuts don't really exist anymore to be remastered. So I dunno.

Given that we know that they were thinking about adding yet more to the 2004 DVD release (i.e. additions to the Battle of Hoth) we might expect some additions to the Blu-Ray set.

I don't care if they use the Special Editions, but the visuals have to be right. If they use excessive DNR they'll fuck it up.

If that's the case then I won't bother with them. I'm pretty sure I've still got the VHS versions of them somewhere

Might pick up ROTS on blu-ray, but I won't fork out for the whole set.

The original theatrical cut would look terrible at 1080p on a 55'' screen. That's more then large enough to be able to clearly see every detail on everything... and also the lack of details on every scene filmed with a foot long model. They work on VHS because the quality is so poor, but in hi-def... not so much. Even the Special Editions are probably going to have glaring flaws that wreck suspension of disbelief.

I disagree - the models used in Star Wars are much more detailed than we can ever see in normal definition.

RotS should look the absolute best on blu-ray however. The extremely hi-res shots of the Battle of Coruscant out there show there is just shitloads of fine detail you'd never see on a DVD. Especially on the Venator Star Destroyers.

The cheap stuff will be the shots with matte lines - they're already too visible as it is on DVD.

They were visible on the VHS tapes as well.

It was one of the few things I hoped they'd fix with the DVDs.

I dunno about you guys, but I can't wait to find out that Alderaan shot first in the Blu Ray ultimate editions.

I am not buying any more SW DVD's at this point; I am happy with the ones I have, thank you very much.

You'd figure they'd use branching content to allow you to customise exactly what SW experience you want, too, but it's more profitable to release six gradually improving versions.

Branching content ? You mean a menu that lets you choose things like greedo shoots first/last or sebastin shaw as anakin/hayden as anakin ? That would be pretty cool if it were done.

Be nice if they made additions, like having additional scenes of capital ship bombardment between Ackbar's "concentrate all fire on that super star destroyer" and the A-wings taking out the sensor globe, maybe even some dialogue added in that makes the point clear that they aren't shield gens. as well as actually see what B-wings are capable of, and throw some TIE Defenders into there.

have some Victory class SDs in the battle of Coruscant, maybe some scenes in Episode 2 where the Acclamators fire their guns at sections of Geonosis and big huge fireballs erupt from the surface.

have the Asteroid only shatter the bridge windows in TESB instead of shearing off the entire tower.

Make it more clear that the Stormtroopers were missing on purpose in the Death Star and Cloud City Escapes by adding in scenes of them having "Improbable aiming skills", and fewer missed shots on the Tantive IV boarding scene (mainly the ones that were on low power and didn't cause any explosions) and more scenes of Stormtroopers killing Ewoks, possibly even showing the attack on the Jawa Sandcrawler with nothing but their hand weapons as a bit of extra firepower display.

That would be worth the cost, just to see how they made it more realistic. That is assuming of course, that they will listen to us.

Well, it would require filming extra footage, and ultimately it'd only be a small set of nerds clamoring for it--your average viewer simply doesn't give a fuck.

I can understand the desire to improve the battle of Endor (even though as it is its one of the best space battles ever put on screen), and I'd kind of like to see the B-wing blowing things up. That said, its not nessissary.

I could stand the VSDs, even if its unnessissary, but the bombardment of Geonosis is pointless. It is very easy to rationalize the lack of orbital bombardment as a desire to avoid collateral damage. If anything, showing multi-Gigaton blasts hammering Geonosis would make less sense.

I can't remember, does the current version actually show it taking out the whole tower?

Where would you add in these "aiming skills" other than aboard the Tantive IV? Most of the time they're shooting at heros, and have to miss. In fact, the only other point in the entire series where you could showcase their aiming skills would be Endor.

Showing more Ewoks getting killed might add realism, but I suspect there's a strong element of fanboyish Ewok hate there.

Showing the attack on the Sandcrawler adds pretty much nothing to the film.

Some of the above is pointless, and its all needless. Hard-core Trekkies would just dismiss any new evidence anyway if it didn't fit their theories, and altering a cinematic classic for the purpose of scoring points in a vs debate frankly strikes me as the height of shallow pettiness.

I don't care about the Sarlacc beak, but I agree about Han shooting first. That was a change that should never have been made, and it should now be undone.

No. The shot cuts away before the dust clears. We never actually see what the asteroid impact did to the bridge tower, beyond what can be inferred by the fact that the hologram cut out immediately afterwards.
