So I started reading the NJO

Post by Darth Balls »

After not reading any EU books for 5 years I decided to come back. Started with Vector Prime and I'm currently on "Edge of Victory I: Conquest"
I'm enjoying the NJO so far, although the Agents of Chaos books were kinda lame.
Right now my favorite character is Anakin Solo.
Least favorite is Jacen Solo. I just can't stand him.

I already bought "Edge of Victory II: Rebirth" and "Star By Star" since I know I'd have bought them eventually anyways. Pretty cool getting back into this stuff after being out of it for so long. :D

Agents of Chaos were definetly lame. However, MOST of the other books are great, excluding Destiny's way and Dark Journey. Star by Star was fantastic, and the Allston books kicked major ass.

Destiny's Way was good but IMHO the Enemy Lines duology and Star By Star are the best pieces of NJO.

Yeah, I'm bummed that Luceno is concluding the NJO. I have nothing against him, but he just doesn't seem to capture the feel of Star Wars. I mean you coulda taken the Agents of Chaos series, changed some names, and I don't think you'd recognize it as Star Wars.

OMG!!! Blasphemy all of you!!! Luceno's books kicked ass. Granted Jedi Eclipse suffered a little of what I believe every NJO book has suffered from. At some point, some crap has to be mentioned or pushed in, basically coming down to that the officials are trying to cram in old stuff and make it gel with new stuff. Prequel type techs and OT situations getting mixed in, then trying to iron out the Yuzhaan Vong. I thought Agents of Chaos I Heroe's Trial really brought the NJO into the Star Wars universe. It was high paced. If you haven't yet, pick up Luceno's other book, 'Cloak of Deception'. It's the prequel book which takes place prior to Shadow Hunter and Episode I. It's about Qui Gon and Obi Wan for the most part, but includes Palpatine and the Trade Federation. It is not only interesting but thrilling. (hmm, that's a good word. Thrilling. ooh). If your worried about Luceno's touch in the NJO, read that book and re read Agents of Chaos.

Skip to Star By Star and start from there. The early books are not worth it.

Star by Star was only good because of the previous books before it, even though they were substandard in comparison

I personally like Traitor, Destiny's Way, Force Heretic I and the upcoming Force Heretics. Star by Star was great but these books are good and theyre strung together.

Star By Star has been the only really good book out the NJO. I just didn't like them at all. I hated the Vong (and not in the good way), Luke pissed me off, and in general the wholee thing felt contrived and strained from the start.

It's not what I want Star Wars to be. But if you ask me, the EU has been going downhill. It was never great literature but it did have a decent ratio of great-to-crap. Now, the best is mediocre and the worst is well, awful.

Maybe if I can find it in the library. I'm certainly not buying anything without Timothy Zahn as the author.

Stormbringer you have a good point in that the EU has gone downhill but The recent NJO has definitely stood out, although not as much as Zahn's books.

I concur, Traitor fucking ruled.Even tough it doesnt have huge spacebattles etc. it still kicked major butt.

Like I said, I might well check out some of the good ones later. But the fact is I'm buying and reading stuff that is consistently better than anything the NJO has yet offered. I've lost interest in the EU in general.

I finished Vector Prime and could take the pain no more. It really pissed me off that it was so predictible. If i get really bored i might order the rest from the library, i'm damn sure not paying for it from what I heard of it.

Id recommend just borrowing or stealing everything from Vector Prime up until Star By Star. Then you can safely invest without worrying about quality so much.

By the way, has anyone read any from the Web Novel "Ylesia"? I want to know more about it but all I know is that planet ylesia is the capital of the Peace Brigade.

Ylesia Web Novel

Post by Dorsk 81 »

You can download it for free from Kazaa and judge it for yourself, basicaly Jacen has returned and goes with Jaina and Kyp to hit the Peace Brigade where Sal Solo is now the head of the Peace Brigade. I haven't read it myself (although I know the rough storyline), but I've been told that there is nothing in it of any great value because its a web book and those not able to read it would miss something.
If you'll recall the Han Solo Trilogy, it's where Han meets Bria Tharen and your right, it's now the Peace Brigade capital which is inside Hutt space, like I said, I haven't read it but only know the rough story line.
I think that the Enemy Lines Duology was great and I've never had a complaint about any of the EU novels that I've read although I couldn't really get into Traitor much, it just seemed a bit "wrong" as if it was all too easy. Don't get me wrong, theres nothing easy about spending days in the Embrace Of Pain, but still the escape seemed too easy for Jacen, although not for Ganner.
If or when you read the Novel, I hope you'll understand what I mean.

SbS is by far the best NJO novel. I would even go so far as to say it's the best stand-alone novel in SW, though the Zahn books are superior when taken as a trilogy.

I dunno, Traitor was damn fine too...

IMO Traitor squeaks by Star By Star by a little bit.

I don't deny that SbS was a class novel, one of, if not the best in the NJO. Denning did a great job SbS, Zahn is also one of the great EU novelists, the Thrawn Trilogy was a very fine Trilogy, but I prefered the Hand Of Thrawn Duology personaly, but to each his, or her, own.
