Star Wars AirTroopers

Post by Shocker »

What is the range or fuel limit of Star Wars jetpacks or jump-packs. I'm curious because I saw the pursuit in AOTC and always though that the Fett's jet pack was only used for short jumps but in the AOTC chase, it would seem almost impossible for Jango to be able to follow the chase if he stole a speeder or used a heavily armed Slave One to pursue. But could he really use his jetpack?

I was wondering if there were any sources on these.

I highly doubt that Fett followed them with his jetpack. I'd assume jetpacks have reasonable altitude, speed, and maneuverability, but that chase was solely in the realm of speeders.

HolonetNews indicates that the end point of the chase was "over 100 kilometers" away from Amidala's apartment, and that doesn't take into account the zigs and zags taken (see this article).

My guess is that Fett had a homing device with Wessel, and he calmly tracked the chase in a speeder. By the time it came to an end, he had time to get to the scene, observe the Jedi take Wessel into the back alley, find a nice spot, and terminate Wessel.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I doubt there jet packs could reach all that far while providing lift. But if you uses repulsers to provide lift and the pack just for propulsion the range could be quite long.

I'd expect Jango had a speeder though.

Jet-pack-equipped troopers might be useful as a SW paratrooper analog.

There are vague references to such troops in various EU. I know they mention "Air Troopers" in the OT VD, and I think they mention them in some WEG stuff too.

Who? Where? Does it mean that the Airtrooper is canon?

Not canon, but high-level official. Let me find the quote...

...ah yes, here it is:
Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, by David West Reynolds; pg. 39 wrote:Other specialized Imperial trooper divisions include flying airtroopers, liquid-borne seatroopers, tunneling underminers, and Magma troopers who crush revolts on volcanic mining worlds.

Thanks!

Hehe, I read the VD as Video Disc, not as Visual Dictionary. :D

No problem, I should have been more specific in the first place. I have to remember that not everybody thinks in terms of my acronyms.

EDIT: at least you didn't think I was talking about the OT Venereal Disease!
