Honestly, if I had to pick one modern director to put in charge, it'd be JJ Abrams. 2009 Trek looked and felt like a Star Wars film anyway to an extent- I remember reading commentary along these lines when the film came out.

Nolan's too dark and psychological for anything except maybe some Noir-type stories involving the Sith or the nastier crime lords. Burton's too... strange. And I just don't like Tarantino. And Cameron... I was willing to give him a second chance after Titanic, but Avatar pretty much killed any respect I have for him as a film maker. Has he done anything good since Terminator II?

Tom Clancy long ago turned into a complete idiot and probably hasn't really written one of his books in a long time either. Larry Bond would make absurdly more sense if it had to be a technothriller author. Tarintino would make a terrible Star Wars anything. The others don't seem like such bad choices.

Do you seriously want some equivalent to the Beetlejuice theme playing whenever Palpatine comes on screen? I mean, yes, it would have made the prequels a lot more entertaining, but I don't think Anakin wearing a long-sleeved striped shirt was quite what you were going for here.

Oh boy, where to start?

The woman is infamous for having a very fanatical view of the Mandalorians and with the plight of the 'poor clones'. She basically made the EU centered around them, reshaping the war between the Republic and the Separatists a smoke and mirrors fight and not a galactic war, but a vast conspiracy involving the Jedi, the Sith and Palpatine. To the point that it would be that the Jedi would have to be complicit in their own extinction.

She also views Jedi as some sort of evil 'holier than thou' freaks.

Oh, and she's really really bad at math.

I have only read one of her books, and that was before I had ever heard of her. I couldn't remember who was who. It was just a big pile of "meh." Then I heard she was responsible for the 3-million soldier galactic army and that sealed it.

She also wrote Jedi that had been VERY well established in their abilities as having to be taught by the Mandalorians as if they never knew them. I.E., she did the barest of resrarch, even going so far as to claim not seeing some of the movies IIRC.

Heck I never read any of KT's books (I gave up on the EU maybe 2/3rds through the NJO) and what I read about her here was more than enough to want her retroactively removed removed from the Wars writing community and have her fed to the Sarlacc. Without the means to Boba Fett her way out of it. Um- nevermind the 3 million clones idiocy, the Mandalorians are peaceful farmers-until they turn into almost invincible warriors? How, pray tell, is this supposed to work? Especially as the two movie incarnations of Mandalorians were complete wusses?

The problem is that too many of the newer filmmakers are from the TV generation and they shoot movies with way too many closeups. They also tend to be ignorant of the material that inspired Lucas. The older filmmakers who "get it" (Zemeckis, Spielberg) wouldn't be interested either out of deference to Lucas or not wanting to play in his sandbox (David Hare). Or because they have their own toys to play with (Cameron, Jackson)

My candidates:

Andrew Davis -does action as well as anyone and has a sense of humor
Roger Donaldson -knows how to film epics without the feeling of "Look how EPIC I am!"
Michael Winterbottom -can make ordinary settings seem almost otherworldly -just think what he could do with exotic locales
Billie August -ditto

As for the candidates mentioned earlier...

Tarantino -he gets the source material (he ought to -he's more derivative than a Glen Larson TV show!) and he has a sense of humor, but he's a shitty filmmaker

Michael Bay -when your best film to date is Playboy Video Centerfold: Kerri Kendall and that was back in 1990, you suck!

Christopher Nolan -anyone who takes Batman that seriously is a wanker and a half

Tim Burton -why not? I mean, he did such a great job when he had the reins on Planet of the Apes

Directors like Tarantino need to stay the hell away from Star Wars. He's the most self-indulgent mainstream director I've ever seen. Tarantino would fill the hypothetical movie with overly elaborate dialogue, blatantly jokey tributes to schlock cinema (he'd have a blast playing up SW's movie serial roots), and bizarrely over-the-top violence. Stuff that would badly clash with SW's simple and timeless nature.

Tarantino has his moments, but I doubt he'd get a Star Wars movie "right".

Here's a name no one mentioned yet: Robert Rodriguez. He could do a gritty, but tongue in cheek "origin story" of Han Solo. Style-wise, think Desperado without over-the-top violence.

Maybe even make it a trilogy. Or even better, two movies, with the second one ending with meeting Greedo at the cantina, so you'd get two trilogies with 5 movies (Han Solo I, II plus Episode IV, and of course Episode IV, V, VI).

I actually like the idea of Nolan getting the Jedi stuff.

Ron D. Moore for a tv adaptation of the Star Wars X-wing series, scored by Bear McCreary. The man's already shown he can do good pilot stories with Galactica, and knows how to write good characters and dark scenes. (Isard deploying a bioweapon against the alien species of Coruscant) Besides, working within an already established framework of the X-Wing Series is all to the good given what happened to the last two seasons. But he has to co-produce the Starfighters of Adumar Episode with Joss Whedon.

For the Han Solo trilogy, Guy Ritche. The man knows crime. For the Thrawn Trilogy, Ira stephen Bher and Michael J. Strazinski.

Oh, that would be brilliant. I'm thinking one season for each two or three books? I'd also like to see them bring back the original actor for Wedge, but he's probably in his fifties at this point.

I can imagine the opening fifteen minutes of the pilot. We see Corran Horn flying his X-wing in battle. He flies around, gets disabled by Tycho's TIE. Then the cockpit opens and we find out it was a simulation. Fun.

I'm trying to think of who I'd want to play Horn. Maybe Jensen Ackles of Supernatural?
