Question about lightsabres

Post by Gandalf »

Are they the same superheated gas that comprises all the blaster/turbolaser type weapons, or is it "pure energy", as has been previously said by some?

And if it is the latter, what exactly is "pure energy"?

The correct answer is we don't know. We do know, however, what a lightsabre isn't; it's not a laser, it's not thermal, it's doesn't derive its power from the force, and it is opaque.

Your guess is as good as mine; I suppose it's some sort of exotic plasma.

This is a good site:

It would be an understatement to say that lightsabres are a very impressive technology. A trektard's nightmare.

To me it's just a cylinder-shaped force field, the kind that incinerates stuff on contact. That would explain why it bounces against other shields, and it deflects blaster bolts.

A lightsaber is a white blade of pure energy. It does not generate heat until it make contact with a solid surface. Lightsabres are solid, BTW. The glow given off is merely a side-effect.

As for bouncing off shield, where have you seen that?

I think he means in TPM when Darth Maul bounces his saber off a shield when fighting Qui-gon.

Lightsabers are supposed to be the pinnacle in a Jedi's training and their ability to make one. Not only do we know that there are certain rare items that go into making one, but also techniques to making them that makes it possible only for those that have reached a certain amount of discipline to create them. Though, it's never said what those techniques are. The most we get is a pressure cooker in Ben's little abode.

"I, Jedi" goes further into detail. After gathering the parts needed to construct the lightsaber, the Jedi spends a month (normally) performing various highly-ritualized Force exercises on the parts, changing their structures slightly so that they will "mesh" better, achieving greater power and efficiency, while building the lightsaber.

Bob Brown's page disagrees with the I, Jedi interpretation, considering the higher canon sources don't seem to support its idea about saber construction (read the part about the "paste fake" and laugh).

They did in some novel. Can't tell really, haven't read any except the novelization of the movie, but there was some guy with a personal force field that incenerated stuff on contact.

Oh yeah and during the Maul fight, they were all kinda worried to crash into the fields every time they did a sprint and it turned on. Even after a near stop, Obi kinda lost balance and almost touched it, so I don't think it was kinetic energy from hitting the "wall" what worried him.

"The Courtship Of Princess Leia". It was Isolder's personal shield - a short while from being activated, the surface started giving off a lot of heat, so it can be used to burn things (and flesh, Isolder used it as a sort of poor man's lightsaber against a bunch of assasins)

Augh, necromancy!

Oh, and the blade can't be "pure energy," because pure energy would move at c.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'
