Palpatine: Where/how did he learn to transfer his essence?

I am looking for information regarding how or from whom Palpatine learned the force ability to transfer his essence, as seen in Dark Empire. The wiki articles on Palpy don't mention specifically how, only that he was a prolific user of the ability. Neither do the articles on the Muur Talisman or the Holocron of Heresies (Darth Andeddu's holocron).

I have a copy of Dark Empire around here somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment. I recall that Leia stole a Jedi holocron from Palpatine that contained the prophesies of Boda Baas (sp?), but I do not remember Palpatine specifically mentioning that he learned the technique from that holocron.

Apologies in advance if I have missed some obvious source, but I haven't read much of the EU stuff in years and my google-fu is weak.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

In Dark Empire because they needed a bad guy to invalidate everything the movies showed and established.

Oh did I mention the EU sucks? :D

Invalidated what/ Wasn't Dark Empire before the Prequels were made?

He stole it off a Jedi he captured from the Holocron he had

Invalidate the whole point of Luke's journey in the original movies. Y'know, saving the galaxy by destroying the Emperor and Vader. Oh hey, no you didn't!

The prequels just make DE even more of an offender as it makes it not only invalidate Luke's journey, but it now invalidates everything Anakin did and went through. Chosen One to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force? Haha just kidding.

It is mentioned somewhere that he picked up the trick from an unidentified Jedi.

Maybe during the gloating when he executes Lemelisk a number of times? Which would mean Darksaber.

*groans*

Let me check...
Lemelisk screamed and begged-to no avail. The agony went beyond his comprehension, beyond his imagina-tion. His vision turned black after the piranha beetles devoured his eyes-but the pain continued for a long time afterward....
Later, Lemelisk had awakened, blinking his restored eyes, and was completely disoriented. He found himself in the same vaulted chamber, wrapped in a clean, white uni-form. His body felt young and strong, without the paunch and the flab from spending too much time working on projects in his mind and too little effort maintaining his health.
Lemelisk bent his arms and looked at his hands, blinking in astonishment. Hearing a small buzz and clatter, he glanced over to find the wire-mesh cage still filled with buzzing, clacking piranha beetles that scampered up and down the walls, snapping their mandibles. Spattered patterns of fresh blood made arcs along the walls of the cage. Inside, he saw a carcass that had been stripped down to gnawed bones and shreds of clothing-the clothing he himself had worn only moments ago.
"You'll grow accustomed to your clone in a moment," the Emperor said, rubbing his knobby fingers over a strange ancient-looking artifact. "I trust that all of your memories have been transferred properly? It is an uncertain skill at best, and the Jedi I stole the technique from was reluctant to give me thorough instruction. But it seems to work."
Lemelisk nodded weakly, wanting to faint but knowing he didn't dare.
Ayup. Darksaber.

Well, that's all I can contribute to this thread. If more detail has been provided elsewhere or if the source has been retconned, I don't know.

If I remember right, he did that seven times to Lemelisk, killing him in a different way each time (like kicking him out an airlock, or slowly lowering him into molten copper).

I thought it was pretty blah, too. Not to mention the whole "You like super-weapons? Well, he's a ton more of them!"

I think what I hated most about Dark Empire was the art style. Sure the storyline was mediocre at best, with like one or two good parts, but the coloring was so bland and dull. It took the bright, rich, and vibrant, SW universe an just turned it into this purple and green..........thing.

Bright, rich and vibrant? What movies have you been watching dude?

Outside of a few exterior scenes on Yavin IV, ANH is white, tan, or metal.
Outside of a few exterior scenes on Bespin, TESB is white, brown and metal.
ROTJ has Endor, which is lots of green and browns, but the rest is tan and metal.

Literally the only bright, rich and vibrant things are the lightsabers and Yavin which is big and red. Even then... the lightasbers are a faded blue or green. Only Vader's blade really 'pop's and even then, only in Jedi.
