Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
John Williams can't continue writing scores for Star Wars forever and he himself have mentioned how scoring the PT have exhausted him. So if there is going to be a composer that succeed him as the primary composer of Star Wars, who should it be?
Hans Zimmer?
Hans Zimmer?

Inon Zur. I loved what he did with DA:O and he's about the only current classical soundtrack composer I know of who prefers to use a live orchestra instead of sampling.

I second Inon Zur for what he did for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Sample.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Williams actually has said that so long as his health permits it, he'll be more than willing to score any future Star Wars movies. Even if he isn't able to score Episodes VII-IX for whatever reason, his music is so iconic and so integral to the franchise that I have a feeling they'd just re-use as much of his music from Episodes I-VI as they reasonably could, then hire someone else (probably his son Joe Williams, or maybe even Joel McNeely, who studied under Williams and did the music for Young Indiana Jones and Shadows of the Empire) to compose a few additional tracks.
Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Yeah, as long as Williams can physically do it, I think he will. I'm sure he understands that Star Wars is his masterpiece, or at least the music he will be remembered for the most. I mean, Indy, Jaws, even as great as Superman is, and my personal favorite, Star Wars is going to outlast all of them in the annals of musical history, not just movie history.
After he can't do it anymore, they will probably, like Dave said, get someone that can carry on what he did in as close a manner as possible. Star Wars is not Star Wars without John Williams period.

One of the best things about the prequels is John William's score. I hope sincerely that he'll compose music for whatever SW films come to pass.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
I honestly don't know what an SW movie would be like without a John Williams score. There have been new tracks composed for games and such, but almost all of those have tried as hard as they could to sound like the movies.
What would SW be like if it had a different type of score?

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
It seems plausible if multiple independent flicks are made at the same time as a new trilogy they might each have a different composer. The only name for an alternative that even vaguely comes to mind is John Powell, and I don't think that fits that well with existing music, I just think it could fit the right movie. I'll also say I know the names of few music composers who do movies. My gut feeling is that these purported independent cash in adventures will be considerably different from any existing Star Wars movie, so anything could be on the table music wise.
Inon Zur sounds good too, never heard the name before but the Fallout 3 music really fit with the setting well, and that's what counts to me more then any specific tone.

I like how everyone just picked a composer they like rather than thinking about who has the chops to fill William's role (as if recycling from the first 6 will be hard for the old man).

He's the guy who did the Nbsg soundtrack right? If that's his style, I don't really think his music would fit the more epic themes of a Star Wars movie.JLTucker wrote:Just hire Bear McCreary and be done with it.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Create new themes. When I listen to star wars music, "epic" is not the word I'd use to describe it. It's loud, bombastic, and annoying. Let's have some low key stuff.Darksider wrote:He's the guy who did the Nbsg soundtrack right? Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Let's not. The classic John Williams score and its spinoffs are as much part of Star Wars as the Force is. And if we are talking about the guy who did the nBSG music, absolutely positively no. Think of the series what you like, but the oBSG title theme was hopelessly superiour.

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Batman continues to show what a hopeless fucking idiot he is.
Why would you want to recycle the same music for another three movies? That's all Williams has done. He has no originality anymore. I think McCreary has it in him to actually make the established themes better or even make better music. He's had better music since 2004.
Here's the thing though: I don't think Star Wars is good enough for McCreary. The series is crap and only loved because fanboys haven't moved on and found better things to enjoy.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
Let me give an example for the nostalgia-ridden fans.
Williams did the music for the first three Potter movies. They are fantastic. When he left, the new composers one-upped him and did so much better. Nicholas Hooper and Alexander Desplat out performed him on every level. They created music that matched the atmosphere perfectly, something Williams couldn't even do with the prequels. New blood all around is a good thing.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
If you say so. Since the first three Potter movies were the only ones worth watching (and the third one was already a so-so) I'm unsurprisingly somewhat unfamiliar with the soundtracks of the rest of the series.

Re: Composer for the next Star Wars movie?
My thoughts would be J.J. Abrams composer mainstay Michael Giacchino. He scored Abrams past projects plus he's already known in the Pixar canon with a couple movies. So if something happens to John Williams, Giacchino I believe has the chops to pick where Williams might leave off.
