Huge old school computers?

Is there any explanation for the gigantic computers in SW besides looking cool? Not only are they huge, but there seems to be tons of them everywhere too.
This poor guy has to man a computer many times more massive than himself!
Even the bridge windows are lined with what look like computers of some kind.
Many rooms, like that seen in the DS's hanger which Chewies storms have large computers (the black and red ones) lining every wall.
Not sure what these are, possibly some kind of computers.

Umm, computers were huge back then. They had no real reason to expect that they would become so miniaturized.

do we actually know how much of those things is actual computers and how much is stuff like casings.
and besides there's good reason to sometimes make something larger then the absolut minium size you can make them.

Also I always thought that those were just control panels, not the actual computers which are probably buried somewhere in a climate controlled server room three floors up and too the left so to speak...

I feel sorry for this guy, all those computers he has to take care of:
In the SSD bridge picture, most of those doodads are probably either access panels, functional lighting, or aesthetic lighting. In the Tantive IV picture (which btw that is a 3rd party/fan render, not a shot from the movie) those boxes are probably covers for random bits and bobs of various functional equipment and a few thrown in probably just to make it look nice and consistent.
Just because it is a box does not mean it is a computer. Or even important.
